Vietnam Kitchen Recommendations

by David R. Pierce » Sun Jan 15, 2012 5:49 pm

I'm going to VK tonight for the first time in 15 years. What is good, beside everything. I'm not big on fish sauce or cooked fish. Help me out!

Fish sauce is ubiquitous in Vietnamese cuisine. Is it that you didn't want something that had a strong taste or contains no fish sauce at all? The cuisine is very balanced in flavor and I don't feel that you would pick up on the fish sauce specifically.

You could try the banh xeo as I believe the only fish sauce is in the dipping sauce itself but you would be missing out.

Fish sauce to me is like anchovies. I don't like the strong, fishy taste and no matter how much people say it "balances", it just tastes of nasty fish to me. I can taste either no matter how far buried in a dish. These two things are the only gag inducing foods I've had, though raw clams are on the no eat list.

Hard to go wrong with a steaming hot bowl of Pho on a cold day. They also have a selection of curries that are very good. Start with the spring rolls with the peanut dipping sauce! And be sure to order the cafe su da. That's coffes with sweetened condensed milk. It brews at your stable and you pour it over ice yourself. Da bomb!

I was going to say that. Last time I was there my wife made me try something different so I got the beef with green beans (E-6?) and it was great. You could also try the Vietnamese pancake. It is an appetizer but makes a good small entree. It is really hard to go wrong at VK.

I made myself a cup before I headed out tonight. I make it kitchen counter side all the time!

Do you have the little brewing baskets? I do!

And don't forget the Cafe Du Monde. Gots to have the chicory in there.

One of my table mates got the clay pot catfish. He and I were the only ones to clean our plates too. Huge bowls of food!
