Live Jazz Bar?

by JustinHammond » Thu Jan 12, 2012 7:23 pm

Looking for the best live jazz bar in this area.

We are willing to travel the surrounding area (90 miles), just wanting an exceptional experience.

Suggestions?

1. Varanese is much more a restaurant than bar, but has some great jazz on weekends (and sometimes during the week - check with them). Last week when the national jazz educators convention was in town Varanese had an all-star band!

2. The Old Seelbach Bar (just off the lobby) has jazz every weekend night, and sitting there you can imagine F Scott Fitzgerald sitting across the bar. Have heard some groups are way too loud for the place, but we haven't found that.

3. Majid's bar area and Buck's Restaurant front area have piano-bar jazz most weekends (can even dance at Majid's)

4. During good weather (e.g.: Summer) Avalon has jazz groups on its patio

The Old Seelbach Bar and any place Steve Crews is playing, trio or solo.

Awesome jazz quartet this past Friday night at Varanese - the place was packed and smoking. They have some jazz at Mozz Bar and in the bar at Marketplace on Theater Square.

You may want to look into the Blue Wisp for a weekend trip to Cincinnati. Cincinnati Museum of Art in the daytime, followed by a nice dinner and end the evening at the Blue Wisp. Check out their calendar. http://www.thebluewisp.com/BlueWispCale ... sthead.htm

I'd go with the Old Seelbach Bar first, with Varanese a second choice. Unfortunately, since the Jazz Factory closed, there has not been a good jazz-focused bar/lounge around. Old Seelbach is always fun though, and draws a pretty good crowd later on weekends.

I had high hopes for Jazzy Blu as a replacement to the Jazz Factory, but unfortunately, despite its name, the music is WAY more R&B/soul than jazz.

The Blue Wisp is the real deal. it's been around for decades and has a great club vibe.

You can also check the arts section of Robin's board for listings of jazz in local clubs. I try to update it at least every couple of weeks (courtesy of the Louisville Jazz Society).

Support local stuff. If Louisvillians keep driving to Cincinnati or Indy for every "Big City" need the ville will never add retail or nightlife like in other areas. I love Blue Wisp but Id suggest trying local stuff first.

Michael, you need to edit the url you posted to have an "h" before the ttp.

Unfortunately, it looks like after this weekend, jazz is done for good at the Old Seelbach Bar. Dick Sisto and his crew have gotten the boot as a "cost savings."

Really, really sad to see. I have to think getting rid of the live jazz will hurt the bar's Friday and Saturday night crowd, at least to the extent locals/non-hotel guests went just for the jazz.
