Snowmaggdon is nigh! Schools closing early

by Dan Thomas » Thu Jan 12, 2012 10:39 am

Hot off the presses! JCPS schools are dismissing two hours early (Elementary at 1:45, Secondary 12:20) because of the impending doom of from frogs or white stuff falling from the sky! Stock up on bread and milk "ya'll"! :D

Bread and milk, bread and milk! Run everyone! Run! We might see a flurry or two and absolutely none of it will stick or accumulate!

PANIC!

Great pics Gayle.
Folks, this is a serious storm as evidenced by this photo taken out my front door in Harrison County a few moments ago.
Snow 1978.jpg

Actually, the pic is the single largest snowstorm I've experienced ... a Noreaster in Connecticut I believe in 1978. This pic was taken while it was still snowing and ultimately we wound up with 30+ in. of the stuff.

Bill,

I'll "see" your Conneticut Blizzard and "raise" you one (1991) MSP/STP "Halloween" Blizzard. Note: Yes I went to work that night...and the next day...and the kids were only out of school one day.

Steve-
I was living in Northesat Iowa for that Halloween storm, but we had just freezing rain and no snow. Only one kid came trick or treating and I gave him every candy bar we had.

Guess some here have never lived through a daytime freeze . . .

The schools aren't closing due to snowfall; rather, we going from a rain (with water puddled on the streets and hills) with the temperature slated to drop to well below freezing within an hour mid-afternoon. If you've never seen the cars sliding down the hill after water freezes, it ain't fun!

While it's true they are brining the roads, the continuing rain can end up washing away most of it.

With the hills here, I don't want school busses on those hills with wet/icy roads and 25 degree temperatures!

 ...We only got 30 inches in Lakeville, in Duluth (and north) they got 39-40 inches...I was "up north" deer hunting the next next weekend in snow up to my waist. Had to have a neighbor who owned a D4 Cat bulldozer plow a road into our deer camp. Lotta drinkin' and not a lot of huntin' that weekend

STEPS ON THE RANT BOX...

What is wrong with the school system? Q: Why can't Johnny read? Q: Why can't Sally divide? ANSWER: The administrators are stupid. I was stunned when I heard the announcement of schools getting out early due to the SNOW. What Snow? I am no meteorologist, but I can look at Weather Underground or read the weather releases from the NWS and figure out there was NOT going to be any trouble on the roads this afternoon. Then late this afternoon I heard some one from @JCPSKY say they needed to be "safe and aggressive" about getting the kids home. Excuse Me! Hey you do know if there were neighborhood schools they could walk home in the snow, right? Like we used to do. Too Much Fun! The first step in correcting this is 'firing' all the board members, beginning with the next election. In three cycles we can put enough people on the board who have common sense and get rid of the administrators who are more concerned with protecting their jobs than with educating our kids. What's next, calling off school because it is going to be too hot when they children are going home?
