Discussion of Marsha's Industry Standard: Your own Top 10

Industry Standard: Insider info for those who dine out

Build your own top restaurants list

By Marsha Lynch

Well, the end of the year is here again, and with it come dozens of “Top Lists,” hustled upon us by media of every flavor. Most of these lists are forgettable and disposable — including the ubiquitous “Top Restaurants of the Year,” written by someone who may know something about the industry, but who may not share your palate, your wallet or your geographical location. So, what if you built your own personalized list of favorite and potential eateries? Then you might never again have to have that dreadful, circular conversation that begins with “Where do you want to eat?”

You can put as many entries on the list as you’d like, but there will eventually be a Top 10, so let’s concentrate on those — after all, they will be your go-to establishments most of the time. Your Top 10 should be a mix of fine dining and casual.

No. 10: Let’s call this the “fantasy night out” choice. Maybe you’ve been there once or twice, or maybe you’ve never been there but have heard glowing reviews and have always wanted to try it. This will be a glamorous restaurant that will require wardrobe planning and a reservation a good deal in advance.

No. 9: Your favorite restaurant/bar combo. Where you and your friends like to drink, and the food is good enough that you don’t have to compromise when you’re hungry.

No. 8: Your choice for a meal with the whole family. Your children, parents or spouse may not be adventurous eaters, but that doesn’t mean you have to end up at T.G.I. McApplebee’s every time you venture out as a group. Do menu research, and search your memory for great times you’ve had as a group dining out.

No. 7: Best place for a business lunch. Casual or upscale? It depends what business you’re in; however, your choice should say to potential clients and business associates that you have discerning tastes and also care about their comfort (and convenience — don’t forget to consider the parking situation).

No. 6: Top restaurant with ethnic cuisine. This can be a fantastic taqueria or your favorite sushi joint. If you’re not in the habit of eating ethnic food, expand your horizons this year!

No. 5: Quick, cheap and satisfying. You love the food at this restaurant, and you’re consistently surprised at how affordable it is when the check comes. Snappy service is a definite plus.

No. 4: Pre-show dining. Whether you’re going to a play, the opera or a sporting event, you need a plan if you’re dining downtown beforehand. Many restaurants have prix fixe three-course menus they are prepared to serve so you’ll be in and out the door in an hour or less. Take advantage of them — the window between the end of the work day and the first curtain or initial buzzer is narrow, and there’s nothing worse than waiting in a panic for your check when you know you’re going to be late for an event.

No. 3: Comfort food. The place where you don’t count calories. You shouldn’t indulge too often so, when you do, make it count. Maybe this place makes its own bacon, or has the most luxurious mac and cheese on the planet. Fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes … but I digress.

No. 2: Healthful food. Yes, you can enjoy food that’s not bad for you, so go ahead and resolve to put this restaurant in heavy rotation this year. This establishment features vegetarian entrees, lean proteins, small portions, fabulous salads and fresh, vibrant food.

No. 1: Your personal favorite. The criteria for this one is wide open. It’s the place where the bartender knows your drink, and you have a favorite table, a favorite server and a favorite dish. You know the one.

When writing your list, go as many deep in each category as you wish. You’ll end up with a great resource for deciding where to dine, so when someone says “Where do you want to eat?,” you’re already armed with choices. So get busy now and save yourself a lot of time in the future. Have a great year, everyone. And please: Eat well.

This reminds me of my hubby and his list...he is a syfy fan he has this virtual box if he went into space he would put 100 of his favorite meals to take with him to be reproduced exactly whenever he wanted..Now if he is eating something good and says this goes in the box I know he loves it....Just like yesterday at O'Sheas when he had the Chicken pot pie..

Marsha
Very nice article and I really appreciated the various choices and how you broke them down. However, with all of the many awesome restaurant choices that we have in Louisville, and you turn in a list that includes a restaurant more than once, then you need to get out more and appreciate the vast diversity we have in Louisville's dining scene.

10. Seviche/Volare, once a year, Groupon kinda night
9. Four Pegs, been there at least 5 times since it opened
8. WW Cousins, been going there with mom and dad for what seems like forever
7. Cafe LouLou, consistently good food, broad menu, great service
6. DakShin, best Indian food in town, been many times and I always leave happy.
5. Al Watan, bets gryos and falafels in the city
4. Patrick O'Shea's/Papalino's, fast, fun, and good
3. The Blind Pig, only go 2-3 times a year but I 'pig' out every time!
2. not too often that I eat at a 'healthy' restaurant, occasionally for a light lunch I'll buy a Morels wrap from Heine Bros
1. Papalino's. Hands down, my absolute favorite food in the city. I've never had a bad meal there, ever. The TOTD's also allow me to be adventurous on occasion.

Fun thread and a good read, thanks Marsha!

I enjoyed your post Marsha.
1. 610 Magnolia
2. Majid's
3.Blind Pig: My 86 year old Aunt liked it.
4. Z's Oyster bar
5. Havana Rhumba
6. White Castle: I know they aren't a nickel anymore but they are on the way home from the airport and you can't get 'em around here.
7. Bristol
8. Pizza: I don't dine on pizza in Louisville but the board's discussion of Coal's has me contemplating a change of strategy
9. Home: Sorry healthful restaurants. I save the dining out for sinfully unhealthy food.
10. Cafe Metro: I know it's closed but that was the only one that met Marsha's criteria. Hard to replace 25 years of patronage with 2 to 4 visits annually.

Perhaps you should review the thread. I didn't name any restaurants at all (yet!)

I've written several columns mentioning the diversity of Louisville's dining scene. Thanks for the advice, though.

Marsha
My comments were not directed to you, but to those that sent in their lists with the same restaurants under different categories. Great article though.

My Top 10 list of good, cheap places to eat lunch. Most are under $10 and by no means is this a complete list. They are in no particular order because I'm usually all over town at lunch and these are places that I seem to frequent the most. I've guestimated the prices but most are close. Also, unless a drink is included, I usually drink water:

1. Papalino's-$6.38 for a BIG slice of one the best pies in town with a drink and a cookie is tough to beat. Plus they have a punch card for your 6th time is free!
2. Annie's Cafe-$6.95 for a big, steamy bowl of Pho is one of my faves. I go at least once or twice a week.
3. Home Run Burger-$6.50ish for the lunch special double burger with fries and a drink. Great burger, awesome Fries(Cajun style). I love the bun which, in my opinion, really is what sets them apart!
4. Wagner's Pharmacy- $7.00ish A Bowl of Whatever soup they made that day or chili with grilled cheese. Fast and comforting.
5. Lee's Korean Grill-$11.00ish Stone Bim Bi Bop. I like to treat myself once in awhile. A little pricey for lunch but you get about 6-7 side dishes of various pickles and Kim Chee.
6. La Columbiana-$7.00ish for whatever the lunch specal is. Or if that doesn't float your boat, you can't go wrong with any of the Arepas.
7. Havana Rumba-$8 or 9 for anything here. You really can't go wrong with any choice and I don't need to heap any more praise upon one of the best dining values in town.
8. Theater Square Marketplace- around $10 Like I said, I like to treat myself occasionaly and this a fine place to do it. One of the Flatbreads or whatever the special is. You really can't go wrong here either.
9. Ollie's Trolley-around $7 for and Ollieburger, fully dressed with cheese with an order of fries with that seasoning and a side of Olliesauce for dipping. Delish! I go more when the weather is warmer and I've been on a Home Run kick lately. Just remember they only take cash!
10. Pho Binh Minh-around $4-7 If I'm out in the South End by Iroquois Park or out in Fairdale, this is my go to spot. Really good Bahn Mi sandwiches and Pho almost as good as Annie's :D

With all of these great places and many others. Why would you eat fast food for lunch?

Vietnam Kitchen is where my family gathers. And I think it is the best ethnic restaurant in Louisville.
