Jackson's Seafood..GREAT DEAL!

by Bryan Shepherd » Tue Nov 01, 2011 7:09 pm

For those of you that venture over to New Albany, either by necessity or by chance, Jackson's Seafood has a great deal called "The Sherman Minton Special". While I have always enjoyed their fish and rolled oysters, this may give you'uns extra incentive to give the place a try if you haven't already.

I am not sure how long this will run, maybe until the bridge is completed, but for $4.99 you get a fish sandwich, either fried, broiled or blackened, an order of fries and a drink. I love the fried fish, but have recently taken a liking to the blackened, since it is a little more friendly to the waistline :P

The tarter is better than average, and you get plenty to eat.....ESPECIALLY FOR $4.99!

Thanks for the reminder. I work a close walk from there. I know what's for lunch tomorrow.

uuugh, sorry this carries over from other post's..... I will NEVER eat seafood here in Louisville.

We are landlocked, and no decent minded fish will ever want it's fins to land here.
by land or by air, you can be a 5 star, 4 star restaurant , and seriously know what you are doing.... nope won't happen here. But good luck with that

Heather, you should really get out more! :) Louisville has a lot better seafood available than many places that are close to or the ocean. Unless you're getting the fish directly off the boat it's just as fresh here because of UPS and we actually have more variety.available. Some of the better restaurants have now begun to take advantage of this fact and I'm sure more will follow.

When we lived in New York City, we learned to be very cautious about neighborhood fish shops. It often took as long to get fish from Fulton Fish Market to Queens as it does to get it to Louisville. Worse, though, they generally weren't impressed by quality, and perhaps most of their clientele wasn't either. Those places reeked of Clorox because they'd keep washing the fish down with the stuff to keep them "saleable" for one more day.

I take that back, I have had Lobster tail at Eddie Merlot's, but only because I was coaxed by a friend. (no no gun was to my head)

I have had bad experience with clam's in The Rockaways before Robin, and I understand what your saying. That is probably why I say that I will not eat seafood here.

I get out plenty Mark, I just don't want to eat seafood in restaurants in Louisville. What are some of your faves for seafood here in the Ville? Will have to try them to see if I would like it.

Heather, You don't have to eat anything you don't want to eat. I would just suggest that you open your eyes and mind just a teeny little bit

Heather, while I don't agree with all Hotbytes favorites, I feel that all the praise heaped on Seviche is warranted. It is one of our favorite places to eat, and have never had any seafood that wasn't impeccably fresh, as well as delicious, while dining there.

Also, while not in the same league as Seviche, Bonefish always serves up some fresh fish at a lower price point. The mussels are awesome

I have had the Ahi Tuna at Bonefish, Do love the ceviche at Seviche,(reminds me of a ceviche I have had in Spain) and I always get the skirt steak when I am there, I can't help it, that dish is addictive.
It seems that I have contradicted myself on this one, and I will be the first to admit it. What I believe most concerns me are Mollusks, probably because of the past experience with bad clams.

:D :D :D Bryan, I will definitely keep an open mind as you say, and the first chance I get I will come across that bridge and find something to eat at Jackson's. Maybe even tonight!

P.S. why would anyone "Blacken" a perfectly good piece of fish that was flown in fresh on UPS.?
oh yea, open mind, Heather, open mind

While I have absolutely no problem ordering fish at Louisville restaurants, I have been burned by fish purchased at Louisville grocery stores to cook at home. The last fish I bought at the Fresh Market on Rudy Ln was treated with some kind of chemical and smelled absolutely disgusting. I also happened to purchase some rancid Crab legs at FM last year. They were frozen when I got them at store and when they thawed they were basically rotten. I have given up on purchasing fish in the 'Ville.

Jen, with all respect, it sounds to me as if you ought to give up on purchasing fish at Fresh Market.

For retail try Highland Fish in Middletown or Seafood Connection in St. Matthews, or Whole Foods. For dining out, as has been mentioned, Seviche is uber-reliable; Z's Oyster Bar, Mitchell's in the Summit and even Bonefish.

Robin,

I know that I only listed FM examples, but before FM we purchased seafood at Whole Foods and have been to Highland Fish Market in Middletown. I really want to like Highland Fish Market; the man who is always at the counter is very personable and full of great information. The selection there seems limited and I always wonder about the volume of business that they do there. The times that I have shopped at Highland, I have been the only customer and I just wonder if they have enough turnover or if the fish hangs around there longer than I would prefer. We've thought about trying the retail side of Mitchell's, but haven't done that yet.

BTW, I tried Highland because of the positive reviews it gets on this site. It's a bit of a drive for us to Middletown, but I sought it out because I really wanted to find a reliable source for fish.

For retail, Kingely's is also a good option. The selection is always very limited, but they tend to keep a good amount of wild-caught salmon on hand.

As has been mentioned here in the past, some of the best restaurant seafood is not at fish restaurants . . . try the sea bass at Corbett's or Asiatique - impeccably fresh & wonderful!

Also, we've had good luck at Meijers with seafood. Ask the butcher/fish monger - some fillets have been there, but the guy behind the counter has always told us which fllets were right off the plane.
