Nothing, really, Alison. It's just that there's competition, and then there's competition. A direct competitor moving in across the street seems a little pushy. Sort of like when Whole Foods came to town and set up about 1/4 mile from the original Wild Oats. It was well known that those two were fierce competitors, and Whole Foods was known for doing this in an effort to push the competition down. In the case of Whole Foods vs Wild Oats, on a national level, it obviously worked.
Now, I like HIC&PK. I liked it all the way back when it was a single, family-owned operation in the Highlands. When a new owner came in and started a rapid expansion, I thought quality took a hit in both product and service. TO THEIR CREDIT, I think new management recognized that and took the firm's quality - and its reputation - back up. Good for them.
But I don't think they're on the same level as Comfy Cow, and I do think the across-the-street move looks a little in-your-face. As for Comfy Cow, they did offer pies and cakes originally at the Westport Village location, but went back to ice cream only because they wanted to concentrate on their core competency. In the face of a direct competitive approach by HICEtc., though, I don't blame them in the slightest for responding in this way.
