Gyros

I went to Pita Delight for the first time yesterday and it was great! I had the beef and lamb gyro. It tasted fantastic, but it made me wonder about something. The strips of meat were all an identical, rounded at the corners rectangle. It obviously didn't look like these had been cut off some spinning spit. I asked the waiter and he said they were indeed shipped in. He said that while the whole meat on a stick thing looks neat, it is not very "sanitary" because often the same hunk of meat will stay on the spit for more than a day until it is all gone. Like I said, the flavor was great, but I did wonder if this pre-cut thing was a normal approach in Louisville, and what you all thought of the server's explanation. Either way i plan on going there many times, because the food was really good.

I get my gyro fix at Omar's. I've never had any problems, and he uses the whole meat-on-the-spit setup.

It does indeed come in a box frozen, sliced and ready to cook. They come in beef, beef and lamb, and I believe chicken. Probably comes from a company named Kronos who also sells the cones that are sliced off of the upright spit. I assume they are the same stuff, just different shape. I have seen them in a number of restaurant kitchens. The slices were used at the Greek festival a couple of years ago on the Belvidere. The server was correct.

Pita Delites is an excellent place. Unless there has been a change, the owners brother owns the Grape Leaf on Frankfort Av.

We like Pita Delights, and also like Chicago Gyros on Brownsboro. My wife liked Chicago better, I prefer Pita Delights. It seemed like Chicago also uses the preformed slices but I couldn't be sure of it, because I didn't ask.

I saw someone in another thread yesterday mention Bosna Mak on Beuchel Bypass, but I haven't been there, even though it sounds very close to me... I just wasn't aware of it.

There's also a place opening (may be already I dunno) on Buechel Bank Road (where Newburg crosses Old Shep and becomes Buechel Bank) called Chicago's which apparently serves gyros as well. From what they told us at Chicago on Brownsboro there is no relation.

I've intended to try Omar's a couple times but it's never worked out.

Bosnak Mak is right down the street from me, and located right next to a middle-eastern bakery. The Gyros are fantastic! They're served on Bosnian bread, rather than pitas. While you're there, check out their little store, and try the pastries!

"Bosna Mak on Beuchel Bypass"

It is not on the Buechel bypass. It is close to Old Bardstown Rd which runs though beautiful (ha) downtown Buechel (think White Castle). Look for Fern and Moodys liquor store and turn there. Although the building has an Old Bardstown Rd address it is about a quarter block up the side street on the left. I don't know the name of the street.

I have gotten a sandwich there a couple of times. Very good. I eat till I am stuffed. Take home and a cold beer and the rest of the sandwich makes dinner. Cheap and good. Place is also a small grocery for middle east products. People are very nice, but sometimes a little problem with language.

Gyros

by James Natsis » Wed Oct 03, 2007 4:45 pm

My wife is very picky when it comes to gyros. But one early evening I was coming down Beuchal bypass and decided to stop off in the little Bosnian shop just off of Old Bardstown to get my wife a gyro (I am a vegetarian!). She really liked it! So it passed my wife's taste test. Even though I no longer eat meat it looked pretty good to me also. Besides, I was the only non-Bosnian in the place hanging out waiting for the gyro. That always adds to the experience.

Sharom's Fishery Station, 5627 Outer Loop, Louisville, KY 40219 has the *best* tzatziki sauce I've ever had; super creamy, thick and tart. A huge sandwich is less than $5.

Sharom has a separate gyros station, with the meat on a spit.

I've been a Bosna Mak fan for several years. The man that runs the grocery and restaurant portion is a very nice and hardworking man. I just ate there this week, the $4 Gyro is an excellent value but they have a full menu as well. I have given hints hoping Robin would check this place out but don't think he has to this point. I just found out the place has been there for nine years. I didn't know this and thought they had been around just a few years. Also, besides their food, their coffee is excellent and cheap, I think $1 in a traditional small cup. I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants some straight forward, inexpensive food that delivers a high value for the price. I don't know the mans name but he is somewhat short and stocky, bald with gray hair. Language is not perfect but good English communication is achievable with patience and listening. Oh, they also have baklava that is pretty good for $1.50.

If I am not mistaken... the review of the Sahara cafe has a photo.
In that photo behind the lovely lady are two gyro/shwarma spits.... I am assuming that they are making those types of sandwiches..

I need to check that out..... yum!

Just for the record I wasn't saying it was there, just that I had read about it being there in another thread. Thanks for clearing the air though on exactly where it is located.

He cracks me up! The first time we went in, he told us to have the Gyro platter, because it was "more better." They're very friendly there, and the baklava WAS great!

I haven't seen Hani's on Bardstown listed in this thread. She has excellent Gyros served in what I suppose is Bosnian Bread and they are carved from the spit.

My husband loves Hani's. They do give you a massive amount of gyro meat, a good value and the owner is super friendly.
