Against the Grain opens in old Browning's on Oct. 4

by Robin Garr » Wed Sep 28, 2011 9:28 am

NEWS RELEASE

Against the Grain Brewery and Smokehouse is excited to announce our Grand Opening onOctober 4th, 2011 at our newly renovated brewpub at 401 E. Main St. in Slugger Field at the corner
of Jackson and Main Streets. Our hours will be 11am to midnight six days a week with a more
limited Sunday schedule, but we will stay upen until 2am if there are sufficient patrons to justify it.

Against the Grain is Louisville's only brewer owned brewpub, and we are proud to share our
innovative beers and delicious menu. Jerry Gnagy, Sam Cruz, Adam Watson, and Andrew Ott are
the brewers/owners who share a variety of backgrounds. Jerry brings an award winning brew
history, Sam has deep ties to both the beer and artistic communities, Adam is a licensed attorney
who would rather practice beer, and Andrew has over a decade of restaurant management
experience. The beer will be an ever-evolving array that always covers the gamut of flavors by
providing a session, hoppy, malty, dark, smoked, and an experimental beer at all times.

The food parallels the beer in quality and excitement as our dual chefs Reed Johnson and
Akeem Hasegawa bring a blend of down-home smoking and gastropub flare to a menu of largely
local foods. Their experience is stellar, and their skill is even more impressive.

We're having a great time down here at Against the Grain, and starting October 4th, you are
all invited!

I stopped in today to pick up a growler of beer they are donating for our fall beer tasting tonight. The place looks great, though there is a very scary picture of Sam C, one of the owners on the wall that will help keep the riff raff in line. They've got a great lineup of beer going there. I got to sample the Biere de Garde and it was fantastic. I also got to sample a bit of smoked pulled pork and they've got a winner there. I wish them luck, and look forward to having a spot inside the ball park to visit when there is a game on.

Got to eat and have a beer here tonight. I got the covalent blonde to drink, which was pretty good. To eat I got the bbq seitan wings. They were better than most seitan you get out to eat , and I'm really glad they have so many vegan options, but the portion size is awful. I've been making seitan for most of my adult life, and one of the coolest things about it is how cheap it is. You can make up a bucket of wings for under $5. You get what looks like a small handful of wings that are the size of gumballs ... For $9! They were alright, but I could never justify paying $9 for the same amount of wings I could fit in my palm. I'm really interested in trying the other stuff on the menu though, the place looks great!

Try the milk stout or the Knotty Squirrel Belgian IPA. There can never be too many places to get good beer. Looking forward to their future offerings.

Yes, and it's about time some place in Louisville had these on the menu. I make them at home from time to time.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

Congrats and thanks for brewing!
Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. D Barry

No offense, but I also can't justify paying $5 for a small vegan hot dog with vegetarian chilli on it

Made it in and had the (bean) sprout burger that comes with kettle chips. It was quite tasty and I didn't leave feeling weighed down despite being properly filled. Had one of the session blondes (that's a beer, for those who've not read all the posts). It was a good pairing as some of the others would have overpowered the burger, I expect. I'll be back with my wife.
Also, kudos to the professionalism to have a proper website up and running by opening day. That was a big factor in my decision to go out so early to try it. My only complaint about it is the website menu is pretty much unreadable for me. It has yellow type against a white background and even on my 24" diagonal monitor I just gave up trying to read it as I was getting so much eyestrain. Should be easy to change it to a readable color scheme.

The website is supposed to be a blackboard. At least that's how it comes up for me. Yellow and white font on a black background. Looks great to me.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
