Some of your prayers may be answered...

by Todd Pharris » Tue Aug 30, 2011 9:44 pm

For as long as I've read this forum, various contributors have longed for a good NYC bagel here in Louisville. Well, a new place called Baby D's Bagel Deli is opening on Baxter near Wick's.

From their facebook page, copied and pasted (I doubt they'll mind):
"Located in the heart of the highlands behind wicks on Baxter/highland. Bagels straight outta NYC!! We are offering Steamed bagel sandwiches and wraps. All of our meats are smoked or oven roasted in house. Those meats include turkey, beef brisket, roast beef, ham and bacon. As our meats are done in house, so are our sauces, aiolis and sides. With funky sandwich names to desserts including chocolate covered bacon, we will continue to keep customers guessing with daily specials, soups and salads. We will be open for breakfast, lunch (everyday) and late-night (Thursday-Saturday)." Late night, by the way, will be 5am. Their soft opening is Sept. 9.

Honestly, I've never had a NYC bagel, but this place sounds pretty good.

Disclaimers, etc...
If this has been brought up on this forum before, then like never mind.

I have no affiliation with this place or anyone who works there. I just found out about it tonight and thought I'd pass it on.

Huh, I was walking down bardstown road today and noticed the sign up, but didn't remember to go check it out when I was walking back up the road. I'll have to wander up for lunch in the next couple of days and see how it is.

I'm hopeful! I could do without the funky sandwich names, though.

There was a short-lived coffee shop on Oak In Germantown that had FROZEN bagels made by a mass-marketer in the Bronx. They were okay, but really not the same as warm bagels right off the line in a bagel shop in Brooklyn or Queens. I wish I could remember the name of the bagel company, but if this is the same source, I'll probably recognize the name when see it.

Frozen? Maybe your prayers haven't been answered...

The in-house smoked/cured meats sound good, though.

Appears to be a copy of the iconic Bagel & Deli at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I looked into bringing a deriviative of it here a couple of years ago. My plan was to bring in Marx kosher style bagels fresh from Cincinnati 2-3 days a week. They are advertising the bagels straight from NYC so not sure how they are pulling that off.

The steamed sandwiches are amazing and addictive. The in-house meats is a new twist.

A few other off shoots from the original are around. Ripple Bagel & Del in Indy, Chicago Bagel Authority, Owens Bagel & Deli in Charlotte.

Looking forward to checking it out.

Bagel & Deli is AWESOME. I miss them badly. Some Miami alums have missed it so badly that they've started up their own B&Ds in other cities. I haven't tried any of the others though, only the original.

Very cheap, tasty, open late. I sometimes make the "Miami Bagel" at home...plain bagel with cream cheese, sliced banana, and cinnamon.

I lived in NYC for a while and while I loved the bagels there, I didn't think they were that much better than Nancy's, Dooley's or the late, lamented Syd's. Personally, I'd prefer a fresh bagel from just about anywhere to a frozen one.

The Coldstone ice cream shop used to carry frozen H & H bagels from New York. They were better than anything produced locally at the time.

You must have had the wrong bagels when you were in NYC because compared to the good ones Nancy's isn't even in the same ballpark! Dooley's were probably the best we had locally (never had one from Syd's). It would certainly be nice to get a real New York bagel shop in Louisville!

I have to agree on all counts. I didn't want to seem like I was jumping on Scott, but we lived in NYC from 1990-1994, and I was also a scout camp counselor there (actually up in the Catskills, but for New York City kids) back in the Jurassic Era. I know bagels - and knew 'em back in the day - and Nancy's are just plain not bagels, sorry. I am a known hard-@$$ on this, but in fairness, I always try hard to err on the side of generosity and don't react with this kind of intensity unless something really makes me unhappy. Dooley's, I tend to agree, are a little ahead of the pack, and Syd's were more so. Breadworks in Chenoweth Plaza also used to make a fairly decent bagel, but I haven't had one for a long time.

The problem with Nancy's is that they might be okay as some kind of a bun, but they're just too heavy and gummy to be bagels. I would say that they resemble NYC bagels like Cincinnati chili resembles Tex-Mex chili, but that wouldn't really be fair to Cincinnati chili.

Breadworks combo bagels are pretty delicious.

My fave nyc bagel has always been Brooklyn Bagel and Coffee Co.
Ironically, I usually go to the store they have in Astoria. Their everything bagel is the best thing in the world.

So, where's the best place in town to get New York City-ish bagels? I bought some for John from Heitzman's on the east end, and they got uber hard the next day. (I am not from NY so don't really know from NY city bagels but John is so I'm trying to find something special for him) I'm not sure if you need to buy one fresh bagel a day every day to keep them from getting hard like that or if it was just an aberation.

That's pretty typical, and it explains why New Yorkers generally go to the bagel store daily. :D Fresh is best. That little coffee shop on Oak - was it the Atomic Saucer or something like that? Had H&H frozen bagels, which were made in a factory in the Bronx. They were okay, but definitely not what you would get from a neighborhood bagel shop in NYC.
