Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint

by JustinHammond » Thu Jun 30, 2011 3:28 pm

I'm hearing this place is getting ready to open on Bardstown Rd., any info out there? Looks like a chain out of Atlanta.

Looks like it falls into the Naked Pizza niche without the naked jokes. Good demographic fit for the neighborhood, maybe ... and another pizzeria within olive-throwing distance of Wick's and Papalino's. Is this town getting pizza-overbuilt?

I did some looking around and apparently thus far they only have one restaurant and in reality are a chain want to be. The existing store has been open about two years and they hope to open 10 more this year. Here's an article from Today's Restaurant about them: Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint
Not sure that Louisville is a good place to try to expand a fledgling chain into this early. It's certainly not as if there isn't a lot of good competition already existing.

They've got the bloodlines, though:

Is that in the old John Riley's parking lot?

I don't think so, Michelle. I poked around on Google Maps, and it looks like Arby's is 1075 so this at 1081 would be back toward Highland a door or two. I can't figure out quite what is there.

I notice that. Of course my wife and I really don't like Moe's but we won't hold that against of them. Also interesting to note that he must be a venture capitalist because he built them up and then rapidly sold them! I also haven't heard about the company FOCUS that was mentioned in the article for being the holding company for quite a few smaller fast food restaurant chains.

Arby's is 1075 and Speedway at the corner of Bardstown and Grinstead is 1101. So the only spot it could be is the "old John Riley's location" (in true Louisville landmark spirit)? There is nothing else between Arbys and Speedway.

While it's possible that Louisville's appetite for pizza knows no bounds, it wouldn't surprise me to see a contraction of that market with some joints shuttering in a few years.

I definitely think this is going to have to happen. Either by some of the big chains reducing the number of stores they have or by some of the small one or two units stores going out of business. I hope it's the former but fear it will be the latter.

Actually, failures have mostly hit the chains. Remember Pizza Magia? Snappy Tom?

I was hoping more along the lines of losing some of Papa John's, Domino's or Pizza Hut stores. The two you mentioned were just small chains and the entire chain went out.

Just barely...I think the last remaining location is somewhere out old Brownsboro road, not quite to Oldham / Prospect, but close. I guess it qualifies as still being in the Metro!

I may be wrong, but I think there was a Louisville-area franchisee who went belly-up, rather than the firm, which I believe is Northern Kentucky-based. Still, I'd count the shuttering of most/all of the Louisville stores as an examle of the point under discussion.
