I have yet to really hit on sushi, which for me means sashimi and particularly Chirashi, in Louisville which really hits it out of the park, but I have found little enclaves of Japanese cuisine that have been wonderful.
I find Hiko-A-Mon to be great for Izakaya style pub food. If you stay in the appetizers section of the menu along with the noodle dishes, as well as sake, beer and the best selection of Sochu in the city. You can have a rockin' good time.
Maido's Happy Hour along with the simpler more Japanese homestyle dishes that Toki originated there are still wonderful and a bargain.
And Dragon King's Daughter's late night happy hour is one of the great unsung hero's of the restaurant world. At 11pm when you're hungry you have a choice of burgers and fries, or wonderful fresh rolls and sushi prepared at a discount until 12pm. It's a fantastic alternative. And it's on Everyday!
I have heard wonderful things about Tokyo and hope to be able to try them soon. I would love to find that Jewel Box of a Japanese restaurant that is quietly zen and produces an authentic product. I look forward to trying them out, but if you haven't given these other restaurants a try, please do.
