Suggestions for "outside of Louisville" Saturday lunch?

by Jackie R. » Fri May 13, 2011 5:20 pm

Friends and I want to drive outside of Louisville tomorrow to have lunch.

Places I've already considered are Westport General Store, Rick's White Light Diner in Frankfort, The Glitz in Versailles, and we've already been to Wallace Station.

It doesn't matter which direction we head as it's all about getting lunch. I'm compiling a list and letting them decide. What else should I put on the list?

I suggest Westport General Store because it's way cool, a pretty spring drive, not too far from the city in case you get the rural jitters and need to get back to someplace where there's a Heine Bros. and, mainly, because Will and Dave just reopened and would probably really love having you visit.

Heads up! The Westport General Store website posts the following hours:
Thursday-Saturday 5pm-10pm.
That would seem to rule out "Lunch." Of course, it hasn't been recently updated because it also advertises a band for Saturday, April 30. http://www.westportgeneralstore.com/

Jackie-

If you want to get out in the country and breathe some fresh air I'd suggest Stream Cliff Herb farm in Comiskey, IN.. Twigs and Sprigs is a restaurant and tea room at the farm and they do have a winery as well on the premises. The restaurant is a tad on the girlie side, but I found the food to be enjoyable both times NJ and I have visited. It tends to be busy on the weekends and I'm not sure if they take reservations but you can wander the general store and gardens while you wait.

D'oh!

Assuming they haven't started serving lunch, how about crossing the bridges and heading up to Joe Huber's?

Jackie,

Heirloom in Midway sounded great when I got that recommendation for ou-of-town guests. Midway is a lovely little town too for a little "girls day out"; great drive taking 60 out. If you are on a foodie trip , stop by Weisenburger to pickup flours/mixes you can't find in the stores.

Thanks for the heads up, Gayle! I checked their website and couldn't find hours of op, but I did notice the only have a dinner menu so I was already planning on placing a call to verify if we went that way.

As for Huber's, I love it, but we're looking for a place we've never been before. Thanks for the rec, Bill - I'll definitely add it to my list. The White Light Diner looks like the leader so far because I posted a link to my friends facebook wall of the interview with Rick after his dance with Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives that was posted on here recently (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV5aJH-3pk8) and she was intrigued. But I KNOW there are places that I'm forgetting or have never known anything about, so even if I don't go to them tomorrow, I'd like to make this a regular thing.

Oooh, that's a thought! I remembered your post for recs in Midway but I fell short of looking it up. Weisenburger has a store? If so, we'll definitely need to check it out because yes, this is definitely a foodie trip.

Jackie,

It's not much of a store, but where they have the actual mill. The have a ( very) small front office and a price list with bunches of stuff you've never seen in stores. Their white grits and bread flour are really great!
If you are doing a foodie trip, also consider going to Lex to visit abbondanza. http://www.olivabella.com/. We used carry their wonderful estate olive oils, and they now import fine cheese and make their own very fine pasta and sauces. Pricey but very, very good. You can stop by for an olive oil / bread and cheese tasting. We love the place.
(Actually, if you end up going I might ask you to bring me back a bottle).

Last time I was in Wallace Station, I saw a flyer advertising a weekend three-course lunch special at Holly Hilly for $18. That caught my attention, as HH as been on my must-visit list for some time now. Still haven't made it, yet.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

What about the restaurant in Shaker Town? A family memeber had her Bridal Lunch there and it was really lovely.

Whatever else you do, do not miss Science Hill Inn, Shelbyville, KY. Lovely luncheon serverd in historic surroundings with some wonderful and priceless antiques and a assortment of boutiques
to help fill your day. Drive out US60 and see the horse farms. You will love this half day adventure.

But don't try to take US60 during the Senior PGA Championship at Valhalla May 26-29 or it will become a not so lovely full day adventure. :( If you are going to go that particular weeend, take I-64 East to the Route 53, Shelbyville exit.

Chef de Cuisine, Ellen Gill McCarty, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. She makes "killer" hot water cornbread and her buttermilk biscuits are nothing to sneeze at either. The Science Hill Inn menu may be found at http://www.wakefieldscearce.com/menu.aspx
