In search of good Hummus

by Rebecca Clark » Mon Sep 03, 2007 10:25 pm

My dining companion and I were great fans of the hummus (among other things!) at the now-defunct Niks on Blankenbaker. Since their closing, we have been on a search for great hummus. Our journey has taken us to Al Watan, The Grape Leaf, Shiraz and Saffrons. While there have been good points with each hummus sampled, we "still haven't found what we're looking for", to coin a popular U2 song. So I thought I'd ask my fellow forumites where their favorite hummus is hiding. Any suggestions?

Hummus

Sorry Folks I cannot resist!

Meridian cafe has really good hummus, and I am not saying that because I am one of the owners! I have traveled in the middle east, and had my share of hummus. Mike makes a pretty good one, it's not bad for a guy from Frankfort! We can even send you with some to go! Just give us 24 hours notice, and you are in hummus heaven!

My favorite hummus is at Safier. It's delicious!

I miss Nik's, too! Their eggplant parmesan was soooo good!

Safir's on 4th street is also my favorite.
Here is the link to the article i did in LEO about hummus (es?).

You have hit most of the best places, but research is never-ending!! I also enjoy the hummus at the Jeruselem Cafe on 4th and Cardinal, near U 0f L. Most of the time they mix it in the food processor as you order it.

I would have to echo Safier's on 4th Street. Very good hummus. A close second goes to Shiraz.

Suzi, is the Jerusalem Cafe still open? Every time I drive by it looks closed. Maybe I just go at the wrong times.

I second Pita Delights. Also very good babaganoush (sp?).

Mojitos

by Doug W » Tue Sep 04, 2007 7:41 am

Mojito's serves up a nice Humus collection - three types on the order. I believe they have a red pepper, black bean, and "plain" humus. Each of them was very good!

Cheers,

Doug.

Our wonderful server at Nik's told us what was in their hummus ... he was somewhat hard to understand with his accent, but was so very enthusiastic about the ingredients of good hummus. I remember the day I received the call ... my friend had gone to Nik's to get some hummus to go and found the dreaded "Closed ... thanks for the memories" sign. A very sad day ....

It looks like I have more hummus research to do!!! Thanks for all the suggestions!

I like babaganoush/baba gajoush/baba ganouj so much that I could eat it by the barrel, yet I'm pretty much bored by hummus. Not sure what's up with that, except maybe that I like eggplant better than chickpeas.

Cafe Lou Lou has tasty hummus. You can get it stand alone or as part of the wonderful Meze plate.

I recommend it.

Robin,
I, too, love baba ghanoush (et al spellings!) but only have recently started sampling the different varieties in Louisville. I tried the Roasted Eggplant at Shiraz last evening and may have a new favorite dish. I could live on any of them, especially with those delicious, fresh pitas or the lavash from Al Watan ... checking clock to see if it is time for lunch. :)
