Lunch favorites?

by Adam Smith » Fri Feb 25, 2011 11:57 am

Not just restaurants but also what you get there, chili or soup or sandwich etc...

Trying to compile a list of places/dishes to try. Number one on my list right now is the bahn mi from Pho Binh Minh.

pomme frites at Cafe Classico (usually with a salad so I don't feel quite so bad).

Try the Huevos Fritos al Caballos at Caffe Classico if you really want to binge. It's the frites tossed in tomato vinaigrette and topped with two fried eggs. Argentine comfort food, and amazing!

Or a half-order of the asiago risotto cakes! Or their amazing real Italian-style pizzas! Caffe Classico is a great lunch spot. Of course, just about everything on the menu at Meridian is good, too. Have I mentioned Michele's on Goss? Or North End Cafe? I keep editing this post to come back for more ...

I like the rare beef and the meatballs too. :D Pretty much anything there is OK in my book.
I also like Annie Cafe as well. I think the Pho is a little more refined at Pho Binh Mihn but there is an aromatic quality to the broth at Annie's that I can't quite put my finger on. The Banh Mi at Annie's is really good as well. Both places have a great cheap lunch!

These are the other places I go to for lunch with frequency:

Zanzabar: None of the steam table lunch offerings have ever let me down,. I also like the fish sandwich off the menu. Plus I like to play a little pinball after I'm done with lunch. 8)

Wagner's Pharmacy: Any of the soups or chili and a grilled cheese. The daily specials are a favorite as well.

Papalino's: I don't think I need to heap any more praise on the best pizza in town IMHO

Senor Iguana's: Chicken Tortilla Soup and a Taco make a fine lunch!

Cottage Inn: Damn good Chicken Livers!

And now to be added to the rotation; Windy City Pizza! A Stuffed Slice, Salad and Drink for only 7 bucks!

Jack Fry's has a fantastic lunch, and it's very moderately priced. People are surprised at that.

My current favorite on the lunch menu is the Fresh Herb Crepe. It's divine. From the menu:

FILLED WITH ROASTED CHICKEN, CRIMINI MUSHROOMS,
BUTTERNUT SQUASH, SWISS CHARD,
COMTÉ CHEESE & FINISHED WITH MORNAY SAUCE

So very rich and delicious.

BTW, I had Safier's lamb biryani special for lunch today and it was soooo good. First time there and I'll definitely be back.

Banh Mi at Pho Bin Min is off the charts! The S4, homemade meatball, is beyond amazing. This husband & wife team do a great job.

Susan's Traditional club sandwich @ Stevens and Stevens
Carnitas taco and the tostada @ Lolita's Taco
Seafood in Spicy Basil Sauce @ La Que
Cuban sandwich @ Smoketown USA
any of your favorite sandwiches @ Morris' Liquors & Delicatessen (formerly Karem Deeb's) (plus they have some nice "craft" root beers and sodas)

Taking dad somewhere for lunch today, I'm thinking the frites from Classico will be a hit with him, and me since I've never been either.

As Robin recommended, get the asiago risotto cakes. Really, really, really good.
