Odd hour dining advice needed!

by Craig Ganzer » Thu Feb 24, 2011 10:55 am

I'm going to be in town from March 10 - 16th for the bridge national championships, and because of the silly tournament schedule, I'm going to need to eat at annoying hours. It's being played at the Galt House and the sessions run from about 1 to 5, and 7:30 to 11. The European and world championships are a lot more sensible, with sessions usually from around 10:30 to 2 and 3 to 7, leaving the evening for a nice dinner, but for some reason that's been wildly unpopular among Americans when it's been tried. Philistines!

Anyway, what this means is that apart from the first day, I'm going to have some fairly annoying requirements, which I'm hoping to get some advice on! Note that I will not have a car and, because of the schedule and cost, I really don't want to have to depend on taxis or car services, so I'm limited to places within about a 15-20 minute walk from the Galt House.

Very late breakfast/early lunch: Ideal lunch would be something light, although any recommendations on a first-rate breakfast place would be extremely welcome.

5-7 break: Meh. I don't eat at 6 if I can avoid it, and I don't want to have a big meal and be sleepy through the evening session. Places for a very light bite/snack/small plate would be great though.

Actual dinner: I'd love to find a place where the kitchen stays open late enough to show up at 11 or 11:30 and not feel like I'm making everyone in the kitchen start groaning! I know that's probably tough. Both 732 Social and Blind Pig look promising, although they're at the outer edge of what I'd call walking distance. Anything else closer?

Incidentally, if anyone reading this is a restaurateur in the area right around the Galt House, you can expect to have a rush around 5 - 5:30 of people who will need to turn the table by 7. I'm not staying for the whole thing but it runs from March 11 - 20th and the usual attendance is around 2,000.

Dish on Market would be be your best choice for breakfast/light lunch. It's open 7am-7pm daily. For dinner, Justin's suggestions above are good.

Hill Billy Tea is one I would have on the list

Some others that are all on the same block and offer quite a wide variety,

Vincenzo's
Fire Fresh BBQ
Bendoya Sushi
Osaka Sushi
Chop Shop
TC's Sandwich shop
Zoe's Mediterranean

Above lists very good.

Just a couple of add-ons:

-for Mexican lunch, Los Aztecas is diagonally across Main Street (across fm KY Center for the Arts)

-further down Main Street is the Bristol, again good for lunch-type stuff (or a dinner-time snack around 6), with decent local bistro food

-while Fourth Street Live (a mainly touristy entertainment block) is due South (about 4 blocks or so) with entirely chain restaurants, a couple are decent (Red Star Tavern, The Pub) and being an entertainment district can be open later than many others . . . you'll also find Eddie Merlot's (regional good steak/seafood chain, upper-end) which may be open late on weekends

-around another 3-4 blocks further South of 4th Street Live (on 4th) is the Theater Square Marketplace, which stays later on some nights (have to call to check) and is definitely worth the walk! (while Justin mentioned Theater Square, there are several other non-recommended restaurants in the square, while the Marketplace is wonderful)

There are many highly recommended places that do serve until midnight or later (Varnese, Asiatique among others), but you'll need transportation for those

Thanks everyone for getting these up so fast!

One thing--the "late-night" meal is the one I'm most concerned about, since this is intended to be my main meal of the day. It's basically going to be impossible to walk into a place before 11:15 or so and even that only if it's very close by. So a lot of the above suggestions look great but may not be compatible with that:( The events won't even end until 11 most nights, and occasionally later.

The bar at Proof is about your only choice and you will have to bust it to make it there. You might have to order pizza and have it delivered.

Proof
Menu at the Bar
Monday-Thursday 3:00pm - 12:00 midnight
Friday 3:00pm - 1:00am
Saturday 12:00 noon - 1:00am
Sunday 12:00 noon - 12:00 midnight

732 Social is fantastic and open late, not walkable, but a $5 cab ride away.

It looked to me to be slightly over a mile? I'd consider that walking distance, but then, I don't drive, so I'm used to needing to use a fairly expansive definition of the term. Plus it's nice to get out a bit after spending 8 or 9 hours in a hotel ballroom.

Yeah, it is about a mile, but they close at 12 through the week. It would be tough to walk the 20-25 min. and be able to enjoy a meal.

You're probably not going to be able to do a 'nice' meal at 11 pm or after on a weeknight but you DO have some options:

Prime - Deli that serves sandwiches and pizza next door. Across from Prime you've got O'Shea's which is open and serving food.

The BBC right across from the stadium serves food till Midnight also.

Those are just a couple right off the top of my head that are easy walking distance.

In 4th Street Live Red Star Tavern serves till midnight on weekends, & has fresh fish, prime beef, etc. Normally I'd recommend a local place, but if we're talking walking distance Red Star isn't bad. (8-9 minute walk)

Also on Fri/Sat Theater Square Marketplace is WONDERFUL, and is around 3-4 blocks south of 4th street live. (15 minute walk) I'd get the phone & call first, just to be sure, but even if you eat at the bar you'll have a jazz singer & piano with great food!

Blu at the Marriott is a decent Italian hotel restaurant, open till midnight M-Sat (5 minute walk)

Champions at the Marriott is a somewhat below average sports bar, with mainly fried food (but I believe you can sweet talk your way into getting something better from the Blu kitchen) open until 1am Monday-Saturday.

Otherwise, as I said above, if you meet womeone with a car your options are a lot bigger!

Craig,

One of the best things about Louisville, is the fact we have so many outstanding restaurants from which you can get a meal. The worst thing about Louisville Dining is, most of the best places don't stay open late even on weekends. And when you add in walking distance to The Galt House it really limits choices. Those listed so far for dinner are your choices.

However...

If you wish to pick one evening and are interested in leaving downtown for a meal, I would suggest Ramsi's On The World Cafe (http://www.ramsiscafe.com/) on Bardstown Rd. On Friday and Saturday Bristol Bar & Grill (http://www.bristolbarandgrille.com/) on Bardstown Rd is open late as well. On Sunday morning the brunch at Ramsi's is excellent.

If you would like to make a late night dinner on Friday or Saturday whilst you are here send me a PM and I think I can get the SSU (Spousal Support Unit) to join me, to take you out to Bardstown Road for a really good dinner late. In fact it could very well turn into a late night OFFLINE for you and any other adventurous diners in our fair city and other FORUMITES who wish to join in.

And I so loved your calling us yanks Philistines! How True!

Drop me a Private Message from here on the forum if you are interested.
