Old "On the Border" location

by Mark R. » Mon Feb 14, 2011 11:33 pm

When we went by their over the weekend there's quite a bit of work going on remodeling the location. There were a couple of dumpsters for debris as well as a couple of trailers like those used by contractors for store and equipment. Has anyone heard any rumors as to what's going in there?

It's going to be an "Old Chicago Pizza" location.

Lame.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I haven't been to an Old Chicago in a couple of years, so things might have changed. That said, I used to visit a location in the Twin Cities pretty regularly...The pizza at that time was defiantly equal to many of the "popular" pies I've tried here in The Ville. The beer selection was pretty darn awesome as well... Something like 25 taps and 30 or 40 bottled selections as I recall.

Given the only the choice of Boombazz at Westport Village or Old Chicago in the Springhurst area, I'll take Old Chicago. Just my preference.

It's funny how certain people on this forum don't want to admit it when a chain actually has good food or when an independent place has horrible food.

Depending on how we define "popular", thats been my problem with the place.

I'll admit both.

But food is just part of the equation. "Taste" seems like a criteria one can use to judge when they don't really want to get into the business and ethical issues of dining out. It's pretty easy to go through life saying, "I don't care if it is a chain or a local. As long as the food is good, I'll eat there." IIRC, that's basically the argument for Trader's Joe in Louisville: It's good for me, so, therefore, it's good.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Thanks for the information, David. I really don't care for their pies so we probably won't be going there. It's nice to see the space is going to be used for something instead of sitting vacant.

Bro,

I'm thinking we're saying the same thing in different ways. I certainly wouldn't call this "destination" pizza by any stretch of the imagination...But I could certainly force myself to choke down half a medium pie given their beer list.

Just a little "blip" Heather. Most of these places may as well be serving toast once Coal's fires up their oven and introduces the "Stevie P Pie"...named after me, if I have forgotten to mention it previously. :D

I'm first in line to say either one, but have yet to had a good pizza from Old Chicago. THAT being said, their Fish and Chips wasn't too bad last time I ate it.

Well, I admit both. I have posted about a number of poor experiences/lousy food at locally owned spots. Other than occasional slider at WC or a sandwich from Jimmy Johns when Im on the road,I just have not found much of any chain food that I like. I guess its a bit of a self fulfilling prophesy, I dont go to chains, therefore I probably never will find much good to say about the food at those spots.
That said...Old Chicago was one of the worst pizzas I have ever eaten anywhere. I left without eating more than a couple of bites,it was that bad. I would have preferred a 99 cent frozen disc to that god awful pizza. There is only one other place I remember not being able to finish a slice at,another Louisville place that I think is closed now.

If your up for the old "chain vs local debate" Im down for it,but Im thinking that dead horse has been beat enough. Im studying the many many(super boring) pages that make up the NFPA 1123 fire protection codes for an upcoming test in NY, and any and all distractions are welcome.

Old Chicago deal fell through late last year...

Junior Bridgeman (ERJ Dining) bought the property after the Old Chicago deal crumbled. I think they closed on it back in the fall.

Pretty sure he is putting a Chili's there since he has a development deal with Brinker to build 40 more units. And Brinker was the owner of the building.

That's all I know...
