Indigo Joe - Closed - Westport Village

by Scott Hack » Sat Jan 15, 2011 12:46 pm

Went to dinner last night with my future bride and her brother and sister-in-law last night. Original plan was to grab something to eat at BoomBozz but they were on an hour wait, so we walked down to Indigo Joes and found the lights out, the doors locked, and a for lease sign in the window. This is a real blow to the dining scene at Westport Village. I hope something else quickly takes its place. Something fun and casual to help fill the void. Cajun?

The raft of restaurant closings reminds me of a line about bicycle shops:

How do you make a small fortune in the bike shop business?

Start with a large fortune.

Really sorry to hear they closed. They had a decent menu and the service was always good. We especially liked: there for lunch.

They've had issues for months...

Something is already in the works on that location though. Not sure it will pan out, but that spot won't last long.

I have to say, while I hate to see any place go under - I never had good food there. It had a fine sports bar atmosphere and the service was good, but I found the food very underwhelming.

Hi Scott... it's unfortunate that it closed down. They put a good deal of money in it. What's equally amazing is the amount of business Wild Eggs does at the other end. The food is good but waiting for an hour for breakfast is nuts!

IMO, Indigo Joes died because they offered bar-grub food at a premium price but never offered a good reason for the premium. The service was good, but the food was 'meh' at best, even by chain standards.

You don't need a chain there: you need a proven local concept...My vote goes for Ollie's Trolley :D ...You could make a killing with that burger and those seasoned fries in that location! Oh Yeah...And then I could walk down to Comfy Cow after eating an Ollie Burger! 8)

They'd need to add a vascular surgeon next door to clean my arteries. I'm GLAD Ollie's is out of the way or I'd be in big trouble.

Dan, you may be only half serious (if that much), but with 5 Guys and Home Run Burgers apparently doing good in such locations, I think an Ollie's would kill. Seriously.

Perhaps the premium prices could be traced to a rent/lease issue. One doesn't have to look much past the (relocated) Mozzoni's or Pig City BBQ to see what a poorly negotiated lease arrangement will do to a restaurant. I'm sure these aren't the only two examples.

I'd love to see something *like* a Panera in there. Fresh bread, sandwiches, soups, casual atmosphere, wifi etc

Wasn't there something like that in the Wild Eggs location; it didn't last long.

I like something like Indigo Joe's, only good. Their food was mediocre at best and their beer/cocktail program depressing.

There sure was. It was okay, but the problem was that it was too much like a Panera and didn't rise much above a chain-like mediocrity. Unfortunately, when you try to emulate Panera without improving on the model, you don't give people a reason to depart from the more familiar brand.

I didn't remember that. The size of the Indigo Joe's space is a challenge in my opinion too. It is a pretty good size space, and people are lazy. Parking isn't as plentiful on that side of the building as it is on the other corner.
