Where to go for a lazy lunch...

by Steve P » Tue Nov 16, 2010 7:13 pm

OK, so my mom is coming to visit next week and I'd like to take her out for a nice lazy lunch. She's a bit of a white bread - Cracker Barrel type eater, so that kind of puts some of the more adventurous spots on the sideline. Any suggestions ?

The Cheddar Box in Middletown is a nice place for lunch. Be advised it gets quite crowded between 12:00 and 1:00 and they do not take reservations: Cheddar Box

You may also consider the Butterfly Garden, they have two locations one in St Matthews and one on Bardstown road: Butterfly Garden Cafe

Also here's a list of all the Tearooms in Kentucky: KY Tearooms Laura has been to Sisters in Buckner in thought it was very good.

I guess drinkin' in the driveway isn't an option?

Steve,

She's a bit of a white bread - Cracker Barrel type eater

With the above in mind, I think that I would choose either Goose Creek Dinner (definite first choice) or Corner Cafe.

Jack fry's. The lunch menu is lovely, & service & prices during lunch are stellar.

Village Anchor. The area is beautiful this time of year and the food is top notch.

Take a nice little drive out to Shelbyville and go to the Science Hill Inn. Excellent food ( in a non-adventurous way) in a quaint place and cute section of town.

Ditto on Science Hill. Chef Ellen Gill makes some mean Fried Chicken. :D
If you are coming into town to show her around, I also recommend the Cottage Inn on Eastern Pkwy and Bradley, and there's always solidly average Wagner's Phamacy. You could take her to the Derby Museum before or after eating at either of these places.

Science Hill is a great option..plus they're already decorated in Christmas. (I realize some people think this is horrible..but I guess working at Hallmark ruined me..I love Christmas!)

I love Science Hill, but I would never compare it with Cracker Barrel! Ellen Gill McCarty, who trained at CIA, is a great chef and dear friend. Here is the menu: http://www.wakefieldscearce.com/menu.aspx (I'm stuck on the shrimp and grits.)
I'm taking my daughters-in-law there next week. Then afterwards we will wander around Wakefield Scarce. By the way, reservations are a must at this time of year.

As much as I love Jack Fry's - it wouldn't be on my list of places to take my Mom. I was recently there for lunch and while the food was great, it was so loud we were practically shouting to each other. There seems to be a lot of business lunches happening and all the chatter made for a loud lunch. My Mom would have trouble hearing.

Gayle,

I would never suggest that it compares to to Cracker Barrel in any way. You are right- Ellen is a fabulous cook - her recipe for corn chowder w/shrimp and bacon is one of my all-time favorite recipes. Knowing Ellen, I'm sure the shrimp & grits is wonderful and as Dan contributed- their fried chicken is one of the best.

Oh, Deb, I certainly didn't mean to imply that you were comparing Science Hill to Cracker Barrel, it was meant to be a reference to Steve's orignial post:
a white bread - Cracker Barrel type eater
I'm sorry.

I, also, am in love with her hot water corn bread.
