Spices

by Bill P » Tue Nov 16, 2010 4:26 pm

One of the things I really miss since moving from Indianapolis is a bricks and mortar Penzey's spice store. Is there anything local that comes close...you know the kind of place I can buy 5 varieties of cinnamon, 15 types of chili peppers, 8 varieties of peppercorns, etc?? I've heard mention of Nuts 'n Stuff but have not made it over that way yet.
Also, any thoughts on why Penzey's has not opened a store in Louisville?

LOVE Penzy's and we're with you, we really miss the "brick and morter" store that was near our home in MN. Alas we're now doing the online ordering thing. Our favs are the Chippy-Dippy mix, the "California Pepper" blend (which I use in dang near everything) and their straight up Chili Powders (not fond of the Chili 3000, 9000, etc at ALL). Becky uses their baking stuff (Vanilla, Cinnamon, etc, etc) almost exclusively in everything she bakes.

Anyone who hasn't discovered Penzy's should give 'em a try...Very high quality and FRESH.

I buy mine online from The Spice House out of Chicago/Milwaukee. Great folks, fresh products, and reasonable prices.

We also love Penzy's! I would have a hard time saying which one of their spices or blends we like the best. Last year for the fun of it we bought some of their Black and Red pepper blend you get used in a lot. It hits the tongue in a little different place and is a great addition to chili!

Maybe with all of us liking them so much we should start a campaign to get them to open a store here! I'm sure it would do quite well.

We also by some spices from The Spice House in Chicago. Somehow they are related to Penzy's and they have a couple of different blends we really like.

In response to your original question we haven't really found any place locally that has a selection of goods spices.

Check out The Spice Merchant. Its no Penzey's, but it is a nice place to get high quality spices.

If I'm not mistaken they went out of business a few months ago!

Yes, indeed. The Spice Merchant closed up shop in mid-July.

It's not Penzey's or even the Spice Merchant, but Lotsa Pasta does keep a fair amount of spices on hand. A lot of the Latino groceries around town have a variety of Mexican spices - there's a big one just down from DakShin - and the Indian groceries, particularly the one near Shalimar, are good sources for Indian spice. All the above posted in the interest of Buying Locally ... but I'll confess to getting a box from Penzey's once or twice a year.

Locally Nuts N Stuff or Lotsa Pasta are both very good choices.

My 'go to' for mail order is World Spice Merchants in Seattle.

In addition to the pure spices, their blends are amazingly good. Their Mole Ole! and Yucatan Rojo BBQ rub are always in my kitchen.

I buy my spices from Nuts N Stuff. They do have several pepper blends. Give Paul a try! And buy local whenever you can.

I'll give Nuts N Stuff a try and I do buy local when I can if the local product and variety is equal to, or superior to the alternatives. The point of my original post was to determine if there was a local purveyor that met my criteria and so far I haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe that is the case. But as I said, I will give Nuts a try.
Cheers.

I used to be the manager at NUTS N STUFF and Paul Pfister is now the owner/operator and a friend of mine.

There is no place in Louisville like it, or the region for that matter. And there is no place like Penzey's either in the area.

Here is the products list from NUTS N STUFF. http://www.nutsnstuff.com/products.html

And, Paul can get almost anything you want.

As an idea of NUTS N STUFF. They have Madagascar Vanilla Beans for $1.95 each. Nice big beans, fresh and ready for vanilla bean ice cream, or vanilla sugar or my personal favorite, home made vanilla extract. The back wall has about 150 jars of spices and you can buy 1/2 ounce, <a pinch> or a pound, an ounce <a tad> or a ton.

I'm just saying. If'n you have not been to NUTS N STUFF you need to go. Meeting Paul is enough of a reason.

Limburger cheese, too, is another good reason. Grilled Limburger cheese sandwiches. yummmy.
