Domino's Pizza: The Bailout You Didn't Hear About

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/us/07fat.html?_r=3&hp

As Sunday's New York Times revealed, Domino's effort to rebrand itself and thereby revive its flagging fortunes was partly financed by a government handout, or, if you prefer, corporate welfare. According to the Times' Michael Moss, Domino's $12 million marketing campaign was created and financed by a USDA-funded organization called Dairy Management

From USDA's standpoint, the program probably worked, if it sold pizzas bearing more than $12 million worth of cheese ...

Sure it is working. However, using tax money to help dairy farmers by promoting cheese then turning around and using tax money to fight the obesity epidemic just doesn't do it for me.

Didn't I also read/hear on TV that the FDA is trying to put a ban on potatoes in school lunches? Potatoes! There's nothing wrong with a potato. Deep frying it maybe, loading it up with cheese, maybe, but the potato itself is quite nutritious. Potato farmers were quite outraged. Well, maybe outraged is a little strong. But then again, maybe not.

Maybe the ban didn't work because it would have lowered the sales of CHEESE fries.

Remember, eat more cheese.

If we want to fight the obesity epidemic, then people need to know it's more than just eating cheese/not eating cheese. Look at this Nutrition Professor from KSU:

"CNN) -- Twinkies. Nutty bars. Powdered donuts.

For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months. "

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/08/twinkie.diet.professor/index.html

Some people are so naive to think drinking a diet coke entitles them to 3 more slices of cheese pizza.

You are absolutely right, but promoting cheese while fighting obesity, with taxpayer money is absurd. Were not talking low-fat "healthy" cheese, but pizza cheese. I'm thinking about going on a cheese pizza diet.

I think his blood chemistry after a time on this diet might make him a mighty sick skinny man, though.

Perhaps. The data suggests his body chemistry actually improved during the diet. However I understand the point. STAYING on this diet, any diet, may lead to being sick. I've no disagreement on this point; only that people don't pay attention to what/how they eat. Whether or not it's a Twinkie diet or Subway diet, I feel the most important issue is to know "when to say when and what".

It's not just school lunches, it's WIC program participants also.

[soapbox] Just remember, big government is corrupt government. [/soapbox]

actually his bloodwork was improving until he tried to add meat into his diet and then everything went in the wrong direction.

i'm not sure how the cheese grant is much different than the grants for corn or even worse, tobacco.

It's kind of like what Kyle said; it's mostly about caloric intake. A person can lose weight on a bacon only diet, just depends on how much bacon he eats. If you're only eating 1,000 calories worth of bacon per day, the weight is going to come off. The weight comes off and the blood work improves. All of this is probably only in the short term, I'd guess the persons health would eventually hit a downward spiral.

Tobacco grants = B.S.
