Papa Murphy's .....

by Becky M » Fri Oct 22, 2010 3:52 pm

We received a flyer for the grand opening of Papa Murphy's here in Jeffersonville. It's really close to my house and some cheap specials for this weekend.

Just wondering any thoughts on Papa Murphy's...........

We like them better than most of the other chains...no real complaints. It's not in the same arena as BoomBozz, Papalino's or Impellizzeri's...but it beats Papa John's and Pizza Hut by a long shot. They always have unadvertised specials running at the one by my house and the prices are always really good.

We bought pizza hut about 2 months ago, we had not had it in years. it was AWFUL. my husband who used to work there a longggggggggg time ago said it was COMPLETELY different. It tasted pretty bad, i mean that seriously, it just wasnt good. And i just remember it from about 12 or 13 years ago when i would eat it while i was in college.

the price for murphys is just enough to try it out. Thin crust 1 topping for 5 bucks, three topping large for 7. You know its cheap and the kids got excited.........pizza is pizza.

going to check it out and report later.

We've got a Papa Murphy's close to our house, and I can honestly say say I've been pretty pleased. It's no Papalino's, but it beats the heck out of Papa John's, or Pizza Hut. Definitely worth a shot!

Here are my thoughts about the "Subway" of build and bake your own pizza.....
Personally, I think that the toppings are of low quality, the sauce and whatever they call cheese are insipid and the crust just sucks. For six bucks and change, I feel can get a better pizza from Little Caesars if that was the route I was going to go.

For around $1.50 you can get a fairly decent frozen pizza dough from Meier, shop around for better toppings, sauce and cheese for another $6 and spend the time prepping what will be a far superior pie while the oven is preheating than you will ever get from Papa Murphy's.

BTW Becky; If your vintage mixer can hold up to mixing pizza dough, the pizza dough recipe from "Joy of Cooking" has served me well over the years. You will be much happier with the results of your labor over Papa Murphy's any day.

just got back. Pretty busy, but i am sure it is because everyone was walking in with their little fliers......as was i. Pizzas look good. Three meat, pepperoni, and a thin crust chicken bacon artichoke...hope it tastes good. I got a salad as well and it was made fresh, thats cool. But then again, i am thinking it might be just cuz of the opening weekend thing.

One bad thing about the take and bake thing............ tell a 3 and soon to be 2 year old that you are getting pizza. Come home from getting said pizza. They want to eat it.......... NOW. oh well.....

cooking now............... smells good.

Let us know what you think, Becky. I gave it a fairly decent review when it came to town - taking a hot pizza out of your own oven gives you a slight edge over a pizza that's had time to cool in the box.

ok here goes----

we ordered three pizzas.

Family size three meat - Regular crust - $9

deLite Pepperoni - $5

deLite Chicken Bacon Artichoke - $8 (all deLites are thin crust)

Your basic sauce and toppings, but everything looked very clean and fresh. Nothing was spectacular, but in my opinion way better than Pizza Hut, better than Little Ceaser's, not sure if it is better than Domino's revamped pizza. The pizza come on these thin paper plate type deals that you can put in the oven, you can remove this after ten minutes or so to get the crust to your liking.

the topping were your basic bulk toppings. The crispy bacon stood out a little, they didnt skimp with it, and well.......shoot its bacon, it was good. Italian sausage a little spicy for my little ones, but still ok. Your regular oily pepperoni. Again, topping were not skimpy, but not overdone.

The Chicken Bacon Artichoke - just not feeling it. I think it is the base "Creamy Garlic Sauce". Did i detect ranch? I am NOT one of those that puts ranch in and on everything, so i can usually tell the "funny" flavor of ranch when its in there.

The regular crust is just too doughy for me, husband wasnt too crazy about it either. It is thick, dense, and doughy. that is the best i can describe it.

The thin crust, i really, really liked. It is thin, but the cool part is and this is what won me over: once you remove the tray you can bake it straight on the oven rack to get as crispy and brown as you like it. i am an oddball that likes my pizza almost burnt. I like the top to look REALLY brown and the bottom to be really, really crispy. I was able to achieve that here. Recommended cooking time is about 15 minutes, but i let the deLite go longer to get it where i wanted. We tried that with the regular crust, but again, its just a lot of crust there, so even though it was crispy, still doughy.........or is the word i want to use tough?

I like my food hot. Not just warm, but i like my food super hot. So, this came out of the oven and i was able to eat it at the temperature that i like. Another plus.

The prices i paid were specials. But it looks like regular prices run about $4 more for each item. Too pricey at regular price, but i think i would buy this again with a good coupon.

My son worked at Papa Murphy's when they first came to town...he did a lot of the prep of the dough and vegies...I know then they made the dough fresh in house and sliced the vegies that day as well. He worked for them for nearly 2 years before moving on. Needless to say we ate quite a few of the pizzas back then but not much lately.

We like Papa Murphys. And we either get coupons from purchasing a previous pizza from them, or in mailers that I have never paid full price for one. I definitely like it better than Pizza Hut. I had the revamped Dominos a few months ago and it was just ok. The sauce was actually a bit too spicy for my taste.

Becky, I'm right there with you on the Papa Murphy's thin crust pizzas. I also like my crust very crisp and starting to blacken, and I also take the pizza off the tray and finish it on the rack to get it that way. I enjoy their pizza much more than any of the chain pizza places, and more than all but a few of the best local places. I just wish there was one closer to my place in Germantown. As far as I know, the closest ones to me are in St. Matthews or across the river in Clarksville.

The problem with the big chain pizzas is the conveyor oven. It does not cook the crust and toppings properly, and it won't brown the cheese. I recently received a coupon
flyer from the Jeff store and took home a pizza, expecting to be disappointed. I thought that the toppings were fresh and plentiful, I wasn't expecting gourmet sausages. For carry-out I feel that the opportunity to cook my pizza on my schedule in my own oven was a plus. For a convenience home meal I would have to rate them above the national chains. And don't you dare suggest that I should roll out my own dough and buy five ingredients..last night that took three hours and cost me eighteen bucks!
