Broken dishwasher earns "C" rating

by Ellen White » Thu Oct 21, 2010 8:34 am

I was walking through Westport Village the other day and noticed that Hiko-A-Mon has a C grade. Any idea why? I don't think I could eat at a sushi restaurant that got a C!

I dont want to rekindle the "did you ask the manager debate" that went on in a recent thread, but if you were just walking by, it seems that it would have been easy to just pop in and inquire.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I eat there all the time and have always had excellent/fresh fish. Some of the crap that gets a restaurant a "C" is ridiculous.

My family eats there fairly regularly. The sushi bar is at the back of the restaurant, only partially obscured by fish tanks. It's been clean every time, and the chefs were behaving professionally. The food is delicious, and even my husband, a man way more prone to stomach complaints than I, has never had the slightest rumbling. I'd find out the reason before avoiding this place.

Ditto. Never an off flavor, never a rumble.

There could have been any number of reasons. The big killer is an uncorrectable critical violation which could be anything from having no back-flow device on the plumbing, a designated hand sink or any sort of refrigeration failure. Here's a a link to the Health Dept. site with all of the grading criteria listed...
http://www.louisvilleky.gov/Health/abou ... scores.htm

Heck, they might have tanked the inspection on purpose to get the "C" which allows you a re-inspection instead of being stuck with a "B'" for the next six to eight months.

•Employees eating or drinking while preparing food.

You would have to be a real dummy to do this in front of an inspector, but I bet it is going on in more kitchens then not.

I've always said that if for some reason I thought I was headed toward a B (I've always had an A) I'd grab a bottle of Windex and put it in the refrigerator and take that C. You're only stuck with it for a week until a re-inspection.

I was at Wild Eggs (Dupont) three weeks ago and they had a C. I was there again about 10 days ago and didn't notice the C so I'm thinking it was gone.

::shrugs:: stuff happens. Then it gets corrected. It's the real world.

Health Inspector having a bad day spots a beverage on a counter in an open container without a lid and decides to penalize the restaurant instead of giving a warning; seen it a million times. But, I agree. It MAY have nothing to do with the food.

Incorrect dishwasher temperatures seem to be the Achilles heel of many places receiving lower scores. It would be my opinion The Health Department would immediately shut down any restaurant posing an eminent hazard. Er something.

I saw Hiko at the Louisville Originals meeting yesterday and he mentioned it.

When the Health Dept. showed up, their dish washer was broken, but a repairman had already been called. He actually arrived and was fixing it before the inspector even left. Unfortunately, they still have to keep the C up until the inspector comes back in a couple of days.

Thanks for Page Two, Jessica. I believe I'll edit the subject line of the first post so people will get the news at the top of the story.

I hate the Health Department only marginally less than I hate the Indiana Department of Revenue and the IRS haha
