Yeah, this and how Arby's makes its "roast beef" both scare the living beejezus out of me.

I'm sure we all have. Chicken nuggets, hotdogs, ect.

It does have a nice color, almost looks like candy.

Kind of like a "bass-o-matic".

Not trying to dispute the less than appetizing aspects of modern convenience food but I strongly suspect that the author's statement that "Basically, the entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve—bones, eyes, guts, and all. it comes out looking like this" is nothing more than a bullsh** statement made by another I-wanna-be-journalist-but-I'm-really-just-a-goofy-blogger. These people really piss me off.

I have a friend who worked for many years at a meat plant making hotdogs...a similarly <ehhh-hem> processed delicacy. In the course of conversation he has told me that while they do in fact use parts of the animal that are less than appetizing (but then again nothing the French or SE Asians don't use on a regular fricking basis with no attempt at disguising) that there are NO...Zero...Nadda..."Guts, bones or eyeballs" in processed meats.

I could go on and on but it's lunch time and I've suddenly got a Jones for a big ol' Chili Dog on an enriched white bun with lots of commercially grown onions.

I'm sort of ok with it until you get to the "soaking in ammonia" bit. Granted you can eat any part of the animal. No eyeballs...damn.

Ahhhhhhh hell, that "soaked in ammonia" stuff is a bunch of B.S. as well. Fricking Bloggers...They like to present stuff as "fact" without any supporting evidence other than someone told them something in a coffee shop over a Carmel Mocha Latte and therefore it must be true. Did I mention they piss me off.

BTW, a really-really quick "Google" search turned up another "Blog" (with at least as much credibility) with the following response to the blog mentioned in the O.P. :

* Mechanically Separated Chicken is not washed or soaked in Ammonia. Ammonia is not an approved food additive, and is on the same scale of toxicity as chlorine.
* The entire chicken is not “smashed through a sieve”. The process is actually designed to remove bones and guts from the meat itself. (Admittedly, some bone does get through, which is why calcium content of mechanically separated meats is carefully regulated, and mechanically separated beef is not allowed as it would increase the risk of BSE, or “Mad Cow”)

Ammonia is used as a processing agent in ground meats. It is not listed as an ingredient, but it is used in the processing. I would like to know where the person disputing what is a well-documented fact got their information.

And, yes, it is indeed toxic.

Told to me in a coffee shop over a caramel mocha latte...by the NY Times. We feed this stuff to children.

I guess someone told Steve P over a cold Bud at a BBQ contest that it wasn't true.

Here's my take on this from 2006. Page down past the corn dog nuggets to the White Castle chicken rings. 8)

I hate it when I dine at some of Louisville's more upscale establishments and have to ask my server for additional ammonia, because my food is not properly ammonia-fied to my taste, and there is none present at my table.

Do you all think I should ask for the manager in such instances or....never mind.
