It's a heavy work/homework day. So, although usually I'm quite happy to drive a bit, tonight we may need to stay close to home...

Origin

Many phrases have originated as jargon in the world of sport, including several from boxing. The memory of Muhammad Ali dancing round the ring with his hands at his side and going on the win the bout might encourage us to think that that is the origin of this one. Not quite, although it does come from sport - horse racing.

Jockeys need to keep a tight rein in order to encourage their horse to run. Anyone who is so far ahead that he can afford to slacken off and still win he can drop his hands and loosen the reins - hence winning 'hands down'. This is recorded from the mid 19th century. For example, 'Pips' Lyrics & Lays, 1867:

"There were good horses in those days, as he can well recall, But Barker upon Elepoo, hands down, shot by them all."

So hands down I know is now appropriate on a monday in the highlands. Hands down, Palermo Viejo.

WOW! Now I know what all the fuss is about. Palermio is WONDERFUL. Fun atmosphere, good food, friendly service. Alan and I wanted to try something a bit different, and were very much impressed. We got the meat selection dishes, plus an appitizer each. We kept seeing things go by the table while we were eating, say "next time we're here....."!

Increadable amount of food. Had enough left that I've got a nice lunch today

One of my favorite places in town. Their Chorizo appetizer is happiness on a plate.

Grilled sweetbreads should be a dish all their own...a little chimichurri and a glass a malbec. Ohhh and those garlic fries....I could go on.

I had the same problem.....try "Where Louisville Eats" in Bing, that is how I finally found it.
