Luigis pizza

by Art T » Sat Sep 18, 2010 8:08 pm

I know I wouldn't be telling anybody anything new here but this former NJ guy thought Luigis was really good for NY style pizza

Went there for lunch this afternoon.

My boring 14 year old daughter had a slice of pepperoni. She thought it needed more cheese but it was good.my wife tried the spinach calzone. It was good if not for too much spinach for her taste.

My 9 year old daughter had the cheese calzone and we all thought it was excellent. The ricotta was fantastic.

I had a slice of the spinach and fresh tomato pie. Fantastic.
My 12 year old son just had a coke because he wanted to go to taco bell

Add 4 sodas and the price was about 28. Definitely more than at home but worth it. I introduced myself to Luigi as recovering NY/NJ guy and told him I wanted some pizza. He told me, rather confidently, that i came to the right place. :D

Thanks for the suggestion Robin.

Glad you liked it, Art! You might try Perfetto Pizza in Plainview, as well, and perhaps the pizzas at Caffe Classico on Frankfort at Clifton, which is not a pizzeria but a continental-style coffee shop and restaurant that has pizzas on the menu. It comes very close to pizzas I've had in Italy ... that's quite different from a NYC pizza, but does boast a similar crust.

A co-worker brought me something from Luigi's not long ago (vegetarian roll of some type - LOTS of veg options there) and it was very delicious. They have my vote, for sures.

I love Luigi's, but Papalino's gives them a run for their money.

The name Luigi just makes me smile in rememberace of Super Mario Bros. The green dude...

Oh the joys of being 'player 2,' all of your existance.

Now, I'm laughing!

:D  8)

PS. Now, I'm sliding off of the edge of the ice board. DOH!

I'm with you, Justin, but remember that Art is a Joisey boy looking for a taste of home, and he already said Papalino's didn't give him the experience he was looking for. Luigi's does NYC street-corner pizza. Papalino's is more like one of the sit-down Brooklyn temples of pizza, like DiFara's. Both legit, but Art is on a very specific quest here.

Oops, sorry, must be confusing you with someone else, Art. Maybe you'll love Papalino's - I do! Note that it's on the Baxter strip and can be VERY crowded at night - only a few tables, mostly a walk-up place. Easier and less wait at lunchtime, although the night scene is probably worth experiencing ...

Had Papalino's yesterday agian, and while good, I don't think it quite measures up to Luigi's, or even Perfetto as far as NY Style.'

They may boast more 'gourmet' ingredients, but I take issue w/ the crust. The last few times, my crust has been inconsistent, and on the 'thicker' side in several slices........a few pieces yesterday were even too thick & doughy to fold, true story.

love to fold it and watch the red oil drip down.... :)

You do know that you're talking about "Original Ray's" style blue-collar street-corner pizza with the famous "mob-distributed" cheese. ;) Get over to Cobble Hill and try some of the old family Italian sit-down places and you'll get a different experience.

The prosecution rests.

But yeah, I like it too. I'm not sure if it's objectively the best, though. Original Rays has come some distance from Naples ...

If we are going to NY for pizza, I'll take one from Grimaldi's in Brooklyn.
