Birthday Dinner suggestions... please

by Adam Smith » Tue Jun 01, 2010 9:57 pm

I asked this question last year too and I will probably ask again next year, but please suggest some places you love that my family and I can go to on my birthday(in three weeks.) 8)

I don't know if it's a good thing or kind of sad that I pretty much solely rely on this forum for my dining information. So far you guys haven't steered me wrong so again I place myself in your collective hands for a place, hopefully new to me, to have a great evening with my sister and parents. If at all possible, include some dishes you love or general info on the place.

Here's a few places on my 'haven't been' list so far: Porcini, Volare, L&N, Avalon, Asiatique, 732 Social, Z's Steakhouse, Z's Fusion, Lilly's, Equus, Conningham's, Basa, Varanese... and there's a few more I can't think of right now. Honestly any suggestion is welcomed as I get out to a nice dinner maybe twice a month. My favorites also in consideration are Seviche, BSB, Blind Pig, and Palermo Viejo.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate it.

I love Porcini. I love Equus. The last time I was at Lilly's it was not spectacular, but it's been a while. I haven't been to Asiatique in years either, but always liked it. I'll be honest and say I haven't ventured to the other on your lists.

Of those I've been to, I'd choose between Porcini or Equus. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Corbett's, Limestone - I very much liked Z's Fusion, especially for pre-theatre drinks and snacks.

Adam, I like all the places on your list, but when it comes to the hard job of narrowing it down, I'd trim it to: Volare, L&N, Asiatique, 732 Social, Z's Fusion, Equus and Varanese. You didn't mention Corbett's or 610 Magnolia, but they're both worthy too. Ditto Wiltshire on Market. Heck, there are just so many!

My favorites also in consideration are Seviche, BSB, Blind Pig, and Palermo Viejo.

Love 'em all, too. Couldn't go wrong with any of those.

732 Social

I know the noise issue has been raised, but the wife and I were there last weekend at 6:00 and there was no music and the place was quite peaceful.

You might add Asiatique or August Moon to your list. My family did a party of about 12 at August Moon a while back and it was fantastic. They handled it quite well.

Corbett's was one I knew I forgot, and 610 Magnolia I didn't even think of for some reason. I think I'll try to narrow it down to 3 or 4 in the next couple weeks and then try to get a read on my family and where everyone would be happiest... Honestly, this decision is as much for my parents as it is for me since they're a bit finicky and hard to impress and I want to try all these places.

Thanks everyone. Keep 'em coming!!!

Le Relais would always be on my short-list. Stunning atmosphere IMO with food to back it up.

Lots of exciting newer restaurants in Louisville, but "Lilly's" remains (IMO) and oldie but a goodie...dined there with friends recently and the high quality remains consistent, with attentive (yet unobtrusive) service...I ordered the Amish Veal Scaloppine--excellent!

I think we have to narrow it down to restaurants with good size TV's in the bar area, since I just realized that the NBA Draft is at 7PM on the 24th and there's so many UK players in it this year. Does anyone know if Mojito's bar area has decent TV's? That's another place I forgot to mention on my 'haven't been' list that I've really been wanting to try, Seems like a good menu, food and drinks alike, to celebrate a birthday.

Awesome food, really small bar. It has one small 19"? tv that is only visable if sitting at the bar.

This might move Volare up to the top of your list. Nice big bar, lots of TVs.

if you end up going to a louisville originals member, remember to take (or get) a louisville originals rewards card!

For this, your best bet would be Volare. Lots of good sized TV's in the bar. Plus, wine is 1/2 off all the time in the bar area. Other options: Varanese also has one or two TV's in the bar area, and one is pretty big (noticed it last weekend). The Pig also two or three (?) TV's in the bar area, and are easily seen from the front half of the restaurant. Z's Fusion has a few TV's in the bar as well, not that big, but easily seen from most of the dining room.

A final option would be Lounge A (downstairs) at Asiatique. Each little lounge "grouping" has its own small TV, so you could relax there and have a TV to yourself. The bar menu is great.
