Cuban Trailer - El Rumbon

by Robin F. » Fri May 14, 2010 11:10 am

I might have the name wrong, but this week a food vendor appeared in the old gas station lot on Shelbyville Rd., across from Oxmoore and between Ken Towery and Wendy's.

It says "Cuban and American" - so has anyone tried it? It looks clean and sounds tasty. The special on the board today was Cuban ribs and rice, $6.

El Rumbon is the name. I was actually going to post about it a few days ago... It is really good actually and a bargain! The menu is an odd mix with quite a few cuban influenced sandwiches and then some American standards (burgers, hotdogs, fries) thrown in for good measure.
I had the cuban baked pork sandwich with mojo and it was great! The menu says it comes with fries but you can also get rice instead. The rice was actually the standout filled with chorizo, tomatoes, and onions it was outstanding. I have a menu on my desk right now and I will try to scan it in later.
It is worth giving a try, I really enjoyed it.

Do they have set hours?

no he doesn't have any set in stone hours yet. I called him on Wednesday and he said he would be open from 7:30am - 7pm on Thursday, but when I drove by at 7:45am he was not open yet. He has only been set up for a week so I think he is still feeling out when he needs to be open.
I am trying to attach the menu to this post if it doesn't work and anyone is interested I can email it to you.

This place is the real deal. I had the pleasure of tasting the pork w/ mojo sandwich tonight and it was fantastic. The pork was super tender, moist, and salty. The bread was...? I can't think of a word to describe the bread. It might be the best sandwich bread to enter my mouth; so soft, tender and buttery. The guy running this show has been cooking at Blu, Whole Foods, and "The Boat" for the last 6 years and is doing things right.

Warning: The portions are huge, don't get sticker shock.

On my way home from St Matts farmers market, I made the stop at the Cuban trailer. Were quite busy right now at the greenhouse,so Ill keep this short. Anne and I split one Cuban and one order of ribs. Huge portions!! Cuban sandwich was as good if not better than many of the variations I have had around town. The fried Cuban ribs were quite enjoyable, moist and tender but still retaining a good texture with the right amount of "pull" from the bone. Both items came dressed with a somewhat spicy, creamy sauce that I couldnt quite nail down. Maybe a yogurt base dressing as some other items there are advertised with a yogurt sauce. I meant to ask for rice as opposed to the fries,so I cant comment other than to say the rice the guy in front of me had looked delicious. I will be back. To make up for the short report Ill add some pics.

The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Another great meal from El Rumbon, this time the pork-steak sandwich.

Reinold ask me if there were any locations available for him to move his trailer. His says the health dept makes him move it every 15 days. He wants to keep it in Lyndon/St. Matthews area. Any ideas?

There the abandoned BP just around the corner on New Lagrange from where he is now. It's in the bend right after the KIA store.

210-9087. He is there today! I work in the office building on Bullitt Lane and I see him everyday! It is hard not to eat there every day!

Stopped there today for the first time. I ordered the baked pork, cuban ribs, and a side of rice. Everything was outstanding. Good flavor, tender, huge portions. Each meal was enough for 2 to share. He said that next week he would be moving over by Choi's Asian Market. He plans to alternate between these two sites.
