Going to Seviche tonight... what should I get?

by Adam Smith » Sat Apr 24, 2010 1:55 pm

I've only been once and that was for brunch. So if anyone has items that I must try let me know. So far I think we're gonna go with a seviche tasting and after that it's a toss up.

I love the striped bass entree, the guacamole, tres leches for dessert. I actually don't like the wedge salad (deconstructed), but the others are good. Ah, and the mahi mahi tacos are yummy. And get a mojito!

Chino Latino seviche is one of my ongoing favorites, but you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. 8)

I'm too full to type all about right now but let me just say that it was one of the best meals I've ever had. More details later after a nap.

OK, here we go. Our reservations were at 8:30, but we arrived 15 minutes early and were seated immediately which I loved. There was a bit of an issue actually getting to our table because there was a large group of prom-goers standing and taking pictures. The hostess was very apologetic about the commotion which I appreciated but I totally understood. Within 2-3 minutes of being seated our waiter came by to take drink orders.

Now I apologize for not remembering his name but our server was fantastic. Very informative about the day's specials and any menu questions we had. Also our wine, soda and water glasses never reached more than half empty without being offered a refill, and he seemed to allow the right amount of time between coming by too much and not enough... perfect timing. As soon as our drinks came out, Madi stopped by to introduce herself and brought us some complimentary steak skewers from the kitchen which were served with a sweet brown sauce and a very spicy green sauce... it was outstanding.

We started off with the seviche of the day which was a spicy, sweet, citrusy sour halibut based concoction with red onions and sweet peppers(along with other veggies I can't recall.and despite being my first seviche I found to be very very tasty. We also had the calamari appetizer which was lightly breaded and fried. Just the right amount of crispy outside and perfectly tender inside, served with a sweet chili sauce and a spiced mayo. Wonderful start!

For entrees my friend chose the Churrascos de Argentina, a surprisingly larger portion of marinated grilled skirt steak w/ chimichurri served atop a red potato mash, and he LOVED it. I almost went for the "Mugs" Bistec, a beef tenderloin dish with a fried egg, but I opted for the day's special entree(can;t recall the name) which was a roasted pork dish served with some wonderful sausages on a bed of black beans and rice. My dish had so many flavors, spicy and sweet and savory and salty, and such a depth of flavor that I was in heaven. It was really unlike any dish I've ever had, tender roasted pork that fell apart with the slightest pressure from my fork and 2 types of wonderfully spiced sausages. The black beans and rice were amazingly good and may have even been the highlight of my meal; if I could figure out how to cook such a simple dish that well I would save a lot on groceries!

Our total, with 2 glasses of wine for me and sodas fro my friend, came to $103 and change which I found to be a good price for a meal, ambiance and service of that quality. I had a Groupon which I had no problem using, and of course tipped our waiter a little over 20% on the undiscounted total.

All in all, using Robin's point scale, I give it a 95 out of 100. One of the best meals I ever had. Thanks to Madi, Chef Lamas and our waiter for an unforgettable meal.

Adam:

Thanks for that great review! I'm glad you tried the Seviche and liked it. I always enjoy their seviches. Yum. And the guacamole. Last time we were they I shared with my wife the halibut. Fantastic. What I love about the food is that they are not afraid of a bit of spice. They have delicious, rich, complicated and robust flavors.

Right now they are all decked out for Derby with red roses on the tables, green napkins, a tent for outside dining, etc.

Great place. Not cheap, but well worth the price. And we've found that by sharing meals and eating appetizers you can really enjoy the place more often. The one thing that I'm not that fond of are their soups. I'm a huge soup fan, but I usually like hearty, chunky soups, like at Uptown (best soups in town!). The soups at Seviche that I've tried are all pureed, a bit too rich in cream and butter, and a bit too spicy (even though I like spice). And they all seem fairly similar to me. With Uptown it's a surprise with every soup.

But the desserts at Seviche are also fantastic. A couple of nights ago we had their flourless chocolate cake. Omg. And their rum infused flan with fresh berries was also amazing. What rich flavors. Seviche is probably my favorite restaurant in town. And there are a lot of great ones, and so that's saying a lot.

Oh, and if you've ever had a fantasy of what Chef Lamas and his amazing team could do with a fancy brunch, you owe it to yourself (and to Mom) to make a reservation for the only day of the whole year (as far as I know) when they do it--Mother's day. I just nabbed my reservation for my family, and so I'm safe in promoting it a little here. Oh my gracious, they have some of the most heavenly breakfast treats imaginable. I can't wait for this year's menu...But I realize they have to get through the madness of Derby first...

I love this review of the halibut at Seviche:

"Halibut is pan-roasted so precisely that the outer crust is as sheer as naughty lingerie; it furnishes just enough surface tension to give you shivers when your fork breaks through it to reveal the delicate, snow-white flesh within. A bed of rice studded with macadamia nuts, a “cigar” stuffed with spicy crabmeat, and a sauce of red chiles and butter furnish the perfect frame..."

Review: Seviche — A Latin Restaurant

Opportunity cost. It never shows up on a restaurant tab. You won’t find it listed on your credit card statement. It doesn’t affect your pocketbook in any tangible way. But from an emotional and psychological standpoint, it’s the cruelest bill of all, because it robs you of what might have been.

Say you’re reading the menu at Seviche – A Latin Restaurant, Anthony Lamas’s five-year-old restaurant in the heart of the Highlands, and the pan-roasted halibut with red chili ginger butter catches your eye. Then you notice that today’s special is pan-seared ahi tuna with a green chimichurri sauce made of jalapenos and mints. At that moment, you are confronted with two glorious futures – but you’re forced to choose one and only one (unless, of course you have an infinitely insatiable appetite).

The future lost? That’s opportunity cost.

Every time I look at Seviche’s menu, I’m tormented by visions of lost futures. I want everything on the menu: all the ceviches, all the appetizers, all the entrees, all the desserts. The only solution I’ve found is to keep going back (which I’ve done often enough that it’s pretty much impossible for me to dine there anonymously).

One way to minimize your opportunity cost (and your dollar cost) is to visit on Sundays, when the ceviches (and bottles of wine) are half price..."

Are Seviches and wine still half price on Sundays?

Benjamin - they did the brunch this year on New year's Day, and the forum had an offline there - took up the whole north side of the restaurant. It was spectacular. I hope to do the Mother's Day brunch, too. I'm glad I was clued into how great their brunch is - it's a rare treat, for sure.

It was soooo good. Not gonna go into another long winded review here so I'll just say that everything we ordered was delicious and the Mugs Bistec is my favorite dish that I've tried so far. Chef Lamas came out and introduced himself after the meal and chatted with my family and I for a bit which was very nice. Love love love Seviche.

BTW, if Madi or anyone here knows what kind of Malbec they serve there please let me know, I want to get a bottle or two for a dinner party this weekend.
