Shortest tenure for a restaurant

by MarieP » Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:21 pm

We've discussed the longest running restaurants in the past, but what about the shortest?

Police donuts in Middletown has to be one of the shortest, it was only open about four months! Not really a restaurant but certainly in the food category.

That's a tough one. Almost anyplace that opened at 1582 Bardstwon Rd between Parisian Pantry and the current occupant Cafe 360 would be a contender, i.e., Barrister's Bar & Grill, Haveli Indian Restaurant, Mulligan's (not of course the same as the Mulligan's where Kaelin's was), Olmecas (a Mexican place), not sure if I got them all.
Burkhart's (where Kashmir is now) was gone in a few weeks, I believe.
Ballyhoo's at 1702 Bardstown Rd opened & closed in 2007.
Bazo's Baja Grill at 919 Baxter Ave opened 2002 & closed Jan 2003.
Benedict's Garden Cafe opened & closed 2006.
Cheba Hut where Papalino's is now opened 2005 & didn't last very long at all.
Chutnee Fine Indian Cuisine at 423 W. Muhammad Ali in 2004 barely lasted long enough for me to get in for a lunch buffet.
CoCo's Flamehouse at 944 Baxter Ave opened Dec. 2002 & closed summer 2003.
Cuba Libre was a great place in Floyds Knobs but they had a fire & never recovered, opened 12/26/07 & closed summer 2008.
Diamonds at 2727 Bardstown Rd only lasted a few months, closed 2005 after changing back to Timothy's briefly I believe.
Jugs at Watterson Trail & Taylorsville Rd (where Vivarazzi was) opened & closed in 2003.
La Rouge at 252 E. Market opened Oct. 2006 & closed Apr. 2007.
Mezzaluna at 1381 Bardstown Rd opened 2003 & went back to being Alameda by popular demand after a few months.
Potstickers at 938 Baxter Ave is up there, opened fall 2009 & closed this January.
Strawberry Islands Cafe at 2303 Watterson Trail opened & closed in 2003.

Annemarie, great list. Scary how many of those places I ate at! And many of them I can understand why they closed!

Benny Impellizzerri's place on Lyndon Lane only lasted about a month, as I recall, which was very surprising. I'm glad the Original Impellizzerri's has had a much happier fate.

The BBQ place before Red Pepper opened. I think they unlocked the door, looked around, and locked it back up again.

I've been told that the lease on that place is $5K a month. I'm surprised Red Pepper made it as long as they did.

There's a spot in Jeff on 10th ST that has been at least 4 restaurants now. I think the last 2 lasted a month each. A cuban joint is set to open there soon.

I am kind of a big deal.

the place where cafe 360 is now. it did a short run as "barristers", got the absolutely worst review ever written by susan reigler, made 20 times worse by the owners reply posted in the courier-journal letters to the editor. i remember their letter saying something like " we saved the pan we used to cook her meal" we recreated everything she had and it was all perfect. i believe she went back to try it again, ordered the barrister burger and was told their "meat delivery hadn't come yet, that they were out of ground beef". . this may have been on hot bytes at the time because i remember thinking, and maybe posting, that there is a kroger about a mile away, what committed (maybe we should all be!) restaurant owner would open their doors for lunch and not have hamburger??? they closed briefly and then reopened as mulligan's, and that lasted about 2 months.

There was a place called Alley Cats directly across from Wick's Pizza on Baxter Ave. They tried to sell pizza in direct competition with Wick's......not a good business plan, whether you like Wick's or not.

It was the same gentleman that used to own the pizza place called Brick Oven Pizza over on Linn Station Rd, I believe. It now houses Perfetto's.
