Coming to Fern Creek: Tandoori Wings, CM Chicken, Bubblevill

by Rich S » Thu Feb 20, 2025 11:37 am

Fern Creek is getting several new places to eat.

Tandoori Wings plans to open at 5628 Bardstown Road, where Beef O’Brady’s used to be. I don’t understand the “Wings” part of the name; it’s an Indian restaurant with a menu similar to other local places. One of the owners is apparently the guy who ran the Himalayan restaurant in the Highlands some years ago. The Tandoori Wings website isn’t working yet, but you can see some information here:

https://www.google.com/search?q=tandoor ... e&ie=UTF-8

CM Chicken, the Korean fried chicken chain, will be opening its third local restaurant at 6600 Bardstown Road, where Home Run Burgers had been. This location is apparently owned by the folks who own the one on Frankfort Avenue; the Norton Commons restaurant has separate owners.

Bubbleville, which serves boba tea, opened earlier this month at 6754 Bardstown Road in the Kroger shopping center.

Thanks for the updates, Rich. I knew about the Korean place, but the Indian Wings place is news to me. I'm intereted in seeing what type of food they're offering.

An another note, Bubba's 33 has not yet opened, and I'm not all that impressed with their menu offerings. But I will say that they built an attractive building perched at the exit of Bardstown Rd and the Gene Snyder. The "Bubba's 33' sign is huge and well lit. Its a good look for the area.

I saw that the CM Wings had their soft opening last weekend. I haven't been, but it's just a few blocks from my house.

We tried to go to CM Chicken yesterday (Saturday) around 4 pm, and there was no parking to be had. I guess that's a good sign, but it meant we had to go elsewhere which is also bad for them. KFC and Homerun Burgers never had full parking lots like that.

Being a boba tea addict, I've been to Bubbleville a couple times. Nice decor, friendly owners, and the boba is legit. It's as close as I'm going to get a boba shop to my house unless someone tries to build a shopping center (again..failed a few years back) at the corner of Watterson Trail and Hurstbourne (in the soybean field).

Funny thing though: CM Chicken has boba tea on the menu, and it's prominently displayed on the building signage. That will make me try it out, even if my wonky digestive tract won't accept the chicken. FYI: there is NO drive-through at CM Kitchen. Since KFC and HB had drive-through, the building still looks like it has it, but nope. Probably would be a good idea for them to use it for pick-up orders though.

I had lunch at CM Chicken at the end of last week. The place is owned by a sibling of the Paris Bahn Mi in Mt Washington. I'm not surprised because one can see a similar pattern, although different food, in their menu and offerings. That pattern is offering a smattering of items that is bound to hit a bullseye in someone's taste buds! So I found it tough to put a finger on it. Its a bit eclectic, and dare I say bizarre, but not in a bad way.

I had "carbonera ramen." It was very good at first, but the cheesiness overwhelmed me as I got further into the dish. My side order of was slaw was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. A couple next to me had fried chicken which is spicy, french fires with spices, and fried calamari.

All said, swapping a KFC for a disastrous Homerun Burger that was empty most of the day, for a Korean style counter service joint is a darn good deal! Its a good sign for the Creek as our food scene continues to be more sophisticated.

I'm interested in hearing Terri's take once he makes it in.

The sign is up for Tandoori Wings Indian and Nepalese Cuisine. There is also a menu on-line. It looks ambitious.

It seems like a step up in culinary choice in line with a clear trend on Bardstown Rd South. I hope they can deliver.

I imagine some of you are tired of hearing about Fern Creek. But I'll add, to the area's credit, that each little shopping plaza from Bardstown and Breckenridge southward has been rehabbed and updated. Its visibly less shabbier.

That really is good news! And please never feel the need to apologize for posting about neighborhood food news, Fern Creek or anywhere else!

CM Kitchen is often very, very busy. That parking lot is so small it causes problems. I'd advise call-ahead ordering and picking up at what was the drive-through window for HRB and KFC. We've been going once a week, and I enjoy the food. Except for Monday's it's usually packed. I really like the garlic soy chicken strips, and the Korean cole slaw (can't really tell much difference from American) soaks up some of the grease. They have bubble tea which is a +++ in my book.

I don't do well with Indian food (my stomach is not a fan), but I'm happy to see new restaurants open here. Takashi opened a few months back behind Moby Dick, and they have excellent sushi at a better price point than Sake Blue.

There's not been much talk about Kim's Restaurant (Korean Rice Cake) that opened in that cursed spot by St. Gabriel Church. I never see a lot of cars there, but I really need to check it out. Perhaps you should too, Robin. ;)

Fern Creek also has a charcuterie places called Graze Craze (not dine-in). I'm not a charcuterie fan so I don't see myself trying it, but it's still interesting. Carali's moved into the strip in front of Glenmary recently too.

I'm hoping this will pull some folks in from Bullitt County who are interested in more ethnic food, as we need to keep these places open!

By far my favorite sushi place of all now. It's amazing.

Carla, Have you ever been to Oishii Sushi (across from Bowman Field)? It is my go to but this new one is not that far from me.

Can you compare the two if you have been to Oishii?

Jerry, the original Oishii was on Bardstown not far from Douglass Loop, and in those days I thought it was one of the best in town. I haven't been in ages, so I'll leave it to Carla to give us the current news. :)
