Re: What's your attitude about tip screens?

I went to the horses mouth last night at Dickies Barbeque. A group of us sing Karaoke each Thursday night at Dickies, and they have an app that has specials and prices not offered in store. I like the use of apps, especially the ones that allow me to pay with a card. I have ordered both online and at the restaurant many times.

There is a tip option when paying online and I have always used it for my standard 20+%, but based on this thread, last night I did not add a tip to the online total.

Upon arrival, the waitress, who we have gotten to know, had the order all bagged and ready to go. Dickies does not have an option to just order on the app for consumption at the restaurant  , so I simply remove the contents and place it on our table (Dickies is extremely laid back). I asked the waitress about the online tip...specifically if she got the tips from online transactions...she said absolutely NOT...said she has never seen a dime from the online tips!!

So there ya go...other establishments may differ, but NO MORE online tipping for me! Greedy corporate scammers!

Ha! I wonder if small businesses setting up new-style point-of-sale systems on handhelds just accept all the defaults - including a tip screen - without actually thinking about it.

Or am I being too kind? :D

I think that's very likely, Robin -- the software has it as a default option and business don't know or bother to turn it off. I've had workers *tell* me "just skip that screen," which makes me think they didn't decide to enable it.

I did another actual check with the drive thru attendent at Pizza Hut Sunday evening (I know it a chaaain, but that thin n crispy crust is what I grew up on). Point blank asked her if I order, tip, and pay online does anyone at the restaurant get the tip?

She chuckled and said "NO" (kinda like "are you kidding me?").

I figured as much, and did not tip online like I used to...handed her $5 and she was astonished and wouldn't accept it! I insisted and won out.
