Honest Indian food.

by Richard S. » Thu Jul 18, 2019 6:24 pm

I just noticed this sign next to Old Chicago at Taylorsville and Hurstbourne. Anyone know anything about it? Looks like it may be a competitor to Shreeji.

News to me, Richard, but I'm always up for a new Indian place!

Did some Googling and it looks to be part of a chain that has about 15 locations, with most around NJ and NY. Appears to be vegetarian; the menu at the other locations is a scaled-down version of what Shreeji offers. Not sure if it's even open yet but I'll swing by in the next few days to see.

They are not open yet. The construction permit was just released. This project should take around 90 days to get open if all goes as planned.

You got any more info on what's coming, Scott? It sounds like a near clone of an existing place going up in the same neighborhood as an original, and that generally doesn't make the new place look good in terms of fair competition. I'm thinking about some past ice cream wars here ...

Reviews of the New Jersey locations peg it as serviceable but uninspired. I'm pretty content with Shreeji. I may give it a try but I doubt it will make me change. If nothing else, having a place like this does boost Louisville's cred as a top-of-the-line food town.

It's supposed to open around Dec. 8-Dec. 10, according to the Facebook page. I looked through the window the other day and they do have chairs and tables set up now.

I went to Honest for lunch on Wednesday and thought it was decent. I ordered samosas and masala dosa and enjoyed them, although the samosa shell was a bit heavier than I prefer. The portions were much larger than I expected and I wound up taking a lot home.

I agree that it’s odd for Honest to be so close to Shreeji, but there are some differences. Honest has table service; you don’t order at the counter. And while they both serve the same kind of vegetarian food, Honest seems to have a more extensive menu. For example, Honest has a big section of Punjabi specialties (paneer makhani, mushroom masala, vegetable kofta, palak corn capsicum, etc.) and some soups that I don’t see on the Shreeji menu.

Honest doesn’t have its menu online, as far as I can tell, but it’s virtually identical to this menu from the Honest restaurant in Edison, N.J.:

I didn't notice this at first, but I've started to wonder what in the heck is going on with the name of that place? I don't think the old slangy term "Honest Injun" is well thought of in this century ... surely they aren't riffing on that?

Thanks. That never occurred to me, and now I'll never be able to get it out of my head.

[img] I, too, am now forced to chant the Chenoweth Furniture song each time this is mentioned. Thanksabunch. I stopped in today at lunch. The place was buzzing, I think the word has gotten out to the Indian veg-only community. We had the Vegetable Biryani, Paneer Tikka Masala and Garlic Naan. Wow. It may be a ch-ch-chain but it's really well done. The menu is, as of this writing, not on their Facebook page, but it appears to be identical to the one linked above. I am going to enjoy bringing my vegetarian/vegan friends here with no chance of meat touching anything. They are in the process of hooking up with the standard delivery services. As mentioned above, it's quite different than Shreeji. The menu is much more extensive, and you order and pay at your table. It's a winner!

Considering a huge Indian population lives in Plainview and Taylorsville/Hurstbourne corridor apartment complexes, I think these places will do well, no matter the proximity to each other. With in 5 miles, there are now 5 Indian restaurants and don’t forget about Patel Bros. Indian grocery next to Shalimar.

Hey, does anyone know what used to be in the space now occupied by Honest?

A Google Street View photo from 2011 shows a Beverage Warehouse in that space. By 2014 or so, Beverage Warehouse had moved to another spot in the shopping center. I don't know what if anything replaced it in the Honest location.

Interesting. Thanks, Rich. The furniture in there - big high-back chairs, nice tables and booths - looked more like something inherited from a predecessor than a startup, but I guess you can get stuff like that gently used.
