Best Rootbeer in Louisville

by Mark Lowe » Tue Aug 03, 2010 3:44 pm

As a kid I use to swear by A&W rootbeer fresh off the tap in a frosted mug. Now days I lean to small house made batch rootbeer like the stuff they serve at BJ's Brewhouse.

Any thoughts on the best brand and place to get rootbeer in Louisville?

BJ's Root beer IS pretty darn good. Another good one is made by Abita (yes, the same company that makes the REAL beer), the only place I've seen it in L'ville is Joe's OK Bayou and (I think) I've occasionally seen it at the Liquor Barn.

If you can make it to the Sunny Side, we have Abita rootbeer in six pack bottles available. We also carry the Sprecher line of sodas, including their rootbeer.

Corbett's has on occasion had Abita root beer on tap. It's been my 15 y/o son's libation of choice when we eat there. He gives it two thumbs up!

They serve it at J. Gumbo Locations too. At least the location in J-Town serves it.

Spooky...

I have been thinking about rootbeer lately. Actually making it from scratch and force-carbonating it. I love the depth and complexity of the real-deal variations. There really are so many ways that one could play with those nuances:

Hightened vanilla, caramel, bitters...

or what I was thinking-

Wormwood-laced

If you ever get around to making some of that rootbeer, save me a bottle!

I love rootbeer and am pretty picky about it. BJ's is pretty good, BBC has too much peppermint for my liking, Abita is pretty darn good too (Comfy Cow sells it as well)! We buy Virgil's by the case, but strangely enough, the WholeFoods brand in the cans is probably one of the better balanced ones I've had of late. Wish someone would pick up the Goose Island root beer, their beer is easily enough to find around here. My favorite though is from Snow Goose in Alaska...not too sweet and lots of spice!

Please don't stone me, but health requires I drink sugar-free if at all possible. Right now, I'm addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper, as the only diet drink that really tastes decent.

I love root beer, but have not come across any that I think are really worthwhile in the diet version. IBC comes close, and when I'm in the mood I search for it, but does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?

Check out the lo-cal Sprecher Root beer for that fix. I too share your addiction to Diet Dr. Pepper.
