Texicans BBQ Pit

by carla griffin » Fri Jun 19, 2009 2:11 pm

After having a meager lunch at home today I rode out to take care of some errands and on my way back, on 146 as you enter Crestwood, before you cross the railroad tracks, my olfactory nerves start singing "BBQBBQBBQBBQ" followed by my brain asking "wherewherewhere?" There on the right side of the road in the spot that used to house a nice little coffee shop I saw a sign that read "Texans BBQ Pitt".(Before the National City Bank.) Even though I had already eaten lunch I pulled in, just to check it out.

The restaurant was little tiny on the inside with only room for about 5 or 6 tables and a counter at which to place your order. Prices were more than reasonable with sandwiches starting at $3.99 or a sandwich with 2 sides for $5.99 or $ 6.99. Dinners were a bit more. Here's what I liked: a lunch size order of cherry ribs with 2 sides for only $6.99. I got my order to go and I swear I almost pulled off the side of the road to eat it, it smelled so good. I managed to get home with my ribs, mac & cheese and green beans. Both the mac & cheese and green beans were OK but not memorable. The mac was creamy cheesy as it should be but like mac & cheese from a million other places. The green beans were the large ,flat, shelly beans which I like but with little seasoning. No bacon fat. Good for vegetarians though I guess, just not how I like my green beans.

I saved the ribs till last. OMG! In the box were 3-4 large ribs smoked/cooked til the rib bones would just wiggle out. Rather than being sauced they were atop of a puddle of very good bbq sauce. I liked that; I could taste the flavorful meat without a coating of goo on them. And sometimes I LIKE baked on goo but these ribs, sans goo, were beautiful. They were a nice pink from smoking with a bit of a crispy rub on the outside. I was thrilled to find such good BBQ so close to home for me. I can't wait to try their pulled meats and sausages.

They've only been opened a month, so if you haven't seen them or tried them yet it's worth the hunt and eat.

P>S> Marsha, I noticed their dessert box on their menu board was crossed out. No desserts. Maybe an opportunity there for you somehow?

Thanks for thinking of me, Carla - I just wish I had a code-worthy kitchen to make desserts in - I don't think there's any shortage of people to try selling them to! (to be fair, I have been offered emergency space in a restaurant kitchen for some cakes I already had scheduled, but I wouldn't want to impose regularly).

Ribs sound awesome, though! I expect we'll hear more about them shortly.

I understand not wanting to impose, but I have known a few places that rented proper kitchens to do what you can do. There is the incubator on east Market St. Might be where the Bristol catering was. That would fit your requirements.

Good luck.

Carla, I am pretty sure these are the same people who had the trailer at the intersection of Hwy22 and (maybe) Covered Bridge Road (Hwy 329)--close to Fast Break Pizza (behind the gas station, across from Dairy Queen???). They had/have very good BBQ. Never had any of the sides except the potato salad which was excellent. According to what we heard, he was a computer guru in Texas until he lost his job. She is from Crestwood so they came back to do what they do best--BBQ. I think she said she went to school with Scott Hack, so maybe he can give us more info.

You know, they recommended the potato salad but I didn't listen because I had just finished a huge tub of potato salad earlier in the week.

Carol has it right. They are the same couple that had the concession style trailer near the Dairy Queen on the other side of the tracks. I haven't made it over to check out their new place yet, but everyone should. They really are very nice and I hope the move works out well for them.

OMIGOD! This is the tenderest smokey pork I have ever put in my mouth. Absolutely delicious. The brisket is very tasty, too – nice smoke ring, with zero fat or gristle. Slaw was good, coarse, very mayonaisey. The sample of the baked beans I had was average – nothing special. But don’t go for the sides. This is a meat place. Did I mention how tender the pork was? I can’t wait to try the smoked sausage, ribs and chicken.

Other than Texas Pete straight out of the bottle, they only offer one sauce. It is a dark, sweet sauce that complements the meat nicely. But if you’re looking for a spicier sauce, you’ll have to wait until they come up with one or else you can blend some Texas Pete in with the house sauce. Or, even better, skip the sauce and get some of the best tasting meat available anywhere at any price.

Sandwiches $3.99 – $4.99. With 2 sides $5.99 - $6.00 2 meats and 2 sides combo $9.99

Location: A converted older home on the south side of LaGrange Road almost to Crestwood (used to be some sort of coffee shop/lunch place/computer repair store, if I remember correctly); 6608 W. Highway 146 (LaGrange Road) Crestwood: going out from Louisville it is about 100 yards before (west) you get to where LaGrange Road crosses the railroad tracks at Crestwood; it is about 2 miles out past Jucy’s, on the same side of the road.

How does it compare to Jucy's? We love them, KBC, and FABD, but are always looking for more good Q. (oops, how's that for some letters!) Anyone know their hours or phone number?

I'm not a big Jucy's fan. While Texicans' selection of meats is not as extensive as Jucy's, I, personally, thought the Texican pork and brisket was better. My best choice would be to get the sides from Jucy's and the meat from Texicans.

Went a couple of weeks ago, and ordered most of the menu, since we had a good group. Absolutely fantastic pulled pork, brisket and smoked sausage. The coleslaw, macaroni and potato salads were great too.

I dare say that this is the BEST bbq in Louisville! I have always thought Jucy's was ironically, on the dry side. And FABD was good, but greasy.

It's definitely worth the trip, about two miles down 146 from Jucy's, right before downtown Crestwood.

Best "Q" I've had in The Ville...BTW, they DO cater and the prices are very reasonable when compared to some of the better known local establishments. Something to think about for that "company picnic".

Pulled Pork - 7/10 (a little dry, not much smoke)
Brisket - 7/10 (not much smoke)
Baked Beans - 8/10
Potato Salad - 8/10
Slaw - 8/10
Ribs - 9/10
Spicy Sausage - 10/10

It is worth the trip just to watch this kid work. He is the owners son and they said he was 15, I don't put him at a day over 13.

After hearing all the great reviews we went out a little while ago to try them out, unfortunately they aren't handicapped accessible :(

I know it has that huge flight of steps in the front, Mark, but I thought it was accessible via the back dining room. Weirdly, as I recall, they have a well set-up restroom. :?

We actually went out one day and tried to get him from the back. The back door through the kitchen has a ramp but inside because of how the sink is located there isn't sufficient clearance for a wheelchair to get through to the dining room. We looked at the side door from the back but it has about a 3" step that my electric wheelchair will not go over. That would certainly be the easiest door to make accessible but at the present time it isn't.
